GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy pulled away from Goucher, 77-60, in the home opener Tuesday evening at The Griffin Complex.

Gwynedd, who had the edge in rebounds, blocks, and steals as a team, used a 29-11 run to close out the contest.  Rich Dunham led the Griffins with 21 points along four assists and four steals. Courtney Cubbage added 20 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Donaven Spencer also reached double figures in scoring (12 points) and rebounds (11).

The Gophers were led by Dwayne Morton with 16 points and Gary Burley Jr. with 13. 

Cubbage's three-point play followed by a big dunk from Sommers off a steal helped put GMercyU to a 7-4 edge early in the game. Morton's triple helped cap an 8-0 Goucher run to get within16-15 with nine minutes in the period. Matt Carter's three helped ignite a 10-0 Griffin spurt for their largest lead of the stanza. The Gophers got the lead down to one with under a minute remaining before Sowmah Slewion connected from downtown to give Gwynedd a 33-29 advantage at the break.

After some missed opportunities by both teams, Spencer opened up the scoring in the second half by sinking both his free throws, but Goucher immediately sunk two points on the next possession as the Gophers would later use a big 11-1 run to take a lead since early in the first. After the teams stayed neck and neck with each other, the lead switched again for good as Dunham was able to hit a three from the top of the key and then get fouled while sinking a layup for a 54-49 lead with 7:38 to play. His six-straight points helped light the fuse that started the game-changing run.  Jeff Seigafuse came up with a huge defensive rebound and then got fouled at the other end of the court on a driving layup to widen the lead to ten points. He later intercepted a pass and ran coast-to-coast for a layup and the foul for a 14-point edge with 2:51 in the game.

Siegafuse ended the night with seven points, six boards, four steals and an assist.

The Griffins will be back in action this weekend at Widener's Tip-Off Tournament for Autism Awareness on Friday and Saturday. Gwynedd faces off with Penn State-Harrisburg on Friday at 6 p.m. They'll face either Penn State-Berks or the host Pride on Saturday.
