Pioneer bench powers Marietta over Bethany in season opener

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Anthony Wallace scored 19 points off the bench leading the Marietta College men's basketball team to a 93-63 season-opening win over Bethany College Friday (Nov. 9) evening in Ban Johnson Arena.

Wallace hit 8-of-9 shots from the floor, including all three from behind the arc, to lead all scorers. Three other Pioneers finished in double figures with Jason Ellis scoring 12, Kyle Matoszkia added 11 and Tim Kreeger chipped in with 10 points.

Matoszkia grabbed seven boards, while Kreeger finished with six rebounds.

Allayasa Bray led Bethany with 16 points and seven rebounds. Aiden Albert had 12 points and five rebounds, while Malik Ellis notched 11 points and five boards.

Matoszkia hit a jumper in the paint to put the Pioneers in front, 7-6, with 16:02 left in the first half. Matoskia's jumper triggered a 21-2 run that ended with a pair of free throws from Dixon at the 7:09 mark and resulted in a 28-8 Marietta lead.

Marietta pushed the lead as high as 30 points, 46-16, in the half on a three-pointer from Mason Lydic with 1:37 left in the period. The Pioneers took a 46-19 halftime score.

The Bison made some adjustments at halftime and turned up the offense scoring 44 points in the final 20 minutes.

Marietta's bench dominated Bethany outscoring the Bison bench, 58-8. The Pioneers won the battle of the boards, 49-34, and forced 21 Bethany turnovers while committing just nine of their own.

Marietta travels to Westerville on Tuesday (Nov. 13) to open Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 7 p.m. tip off at Otterbein University.
