Cougars win shootout at Crown; advance to UMAC semis

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris raced out to a big lead and did not look back as they defeated Crown, 110-96, Monday night in a UMAC Men's Basketball Quarterfinal game in St. Bonifacius.

The No. 5 seed Cougars move on to the semifinals Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. at No. 1 seed Bethany Lutheran in Mankato. Bethany won both regular season meetings against the Cougars.

Minnesota Morris made eight of their first ten shots in building an early 18-7 lead. Noah Grove and Trey Heinsuis each made 3s to start the scoring surge. The Halverson brothers extended the lead to 15 shortly thereafter. Jeremy drained a shot from distance and his Jeffrey followed with his own to make it 29-14. UMM stayed hot from behind the arc as Jeremy Halverson and Darius Westrich hit back-to-back 3s to give the Cougars a 35-16 lead with 9:33 remaining in the first half. Jeremy Halverson drained another from deep to give UMM their first 20-point lead at 38-18. The lead would get to as high as 21, but Crown would make a little run at the end of the half as the Cougars would take a 54-40 lead into the locker room.

Crown made the first two baskets of the second to pull within 10. The Cougars countered with seven straight to go back up by 17 at 61-44. The Cougar lead would stay within 12 and 21 throughout the rest of the game. Every time Crown thought they had a rally started, the Cougars would counter with a bucket to to halt it. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor in the second half. The Storm were at 55 percent while the Cougars were a bit better at 64 percent. UMM shot 60 percent for the entire game and made 26-of-30 from the free throw line (87 percent). This marks the fifth this season the Cougars have reached the century mark.

CD Douglas added to his new career scoring mark with 30 points. He added six rebounds and six assists. Grove scored 26. Jeremy Halverson scored 19 while Jeffrey Halverson added 13.

It will be a Cougar-Viking doubleheader Wednesday night in Mankato. The No. 3 seed Minnesota Morris women will take on No. 2 Bethany Lutheran following the men's game.
