Oneonta Men Upset Cortland, 60-57, in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Harrison Deegan and Joseph Bull scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, as sixth-seeded Oneonta held off host and third-seeded Cortland, 60-57, in the SUNYAC men's basketball tournament quarterfinals.

Oneonta (13-13) advances to play second-seeded Brockport in the semifinals Friday at Plattsburgh. Cortland dropped to 18-8 with the loss.

Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) led Cortland with 16 points, 14 in the second half. He also recorded five rebounds and three assists. James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) finished with 12 points, five assists and two blocks, and Zach Lydon (Elizaville/Stissing Mountain) added eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Deegan shot 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line, while Bull was 7-of-8 from the field and grabbed five rebounds in 21 and 20 minutes off the bench, respectively. Dwayne Freeman registered 10 points and four assists, Ian Schultz finished with eight points, 14 rebounds and three assists, and Sean Nolan scored seven points, grabbed 12 boards and dished out three assists.

Oneonta trailed only once in the game at 6-5 with 16:41 left in the first half. The guests went on a 10-3 to turn a 23-18 lead into a 33-21 advantage late in the first half, and they led 33-23 at halftime.

Cortland quickly cut its deficit to five on five points from Cooper in the first 36 seconds of the second half, but Oneonta scored the next eight, four by Schultz, and held its largest lead at 41-28 with 16 minutes remaining.

Cortland slowly whittled away at its deficit and eventually got to within 53-51 on a Lydon layup with 5:22 left. Cortland also trailed by just two at 56-54 when Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) hit a corner 3-pointer with 2:39 left.

Oneonta answered with buckets from Deegan and Bull to take a 60-54 lead with 1:17 left. Cooper rebounded his own miss and fed Morales for a 3-pointer with 53 seconds on the clock and Cortland trailed 60-57.

After forcing a turnover in the backcourt, Cortland had a potential tying 3-pointer miss the mark with 34 seconds left. Having committed only three team fouls in the half to that point, Cortland quickly committed four fouls and put Oneonta on the line for a 1-and-1 with 22 seconds left. The first attempt missed, giving Cortland another opportunity to tie the game.

Cooper's off-balance 3-pointer with seven seconds left came up short, but Fitzpatrick fought to force a jump ball on the rebound, with the possession arrow favoring Cortland. Following a timeout, the hosts had a final chance to force overtime, but a Morales 3-pointer just missed and Bull gathered in the rebound as the buzzer rang.

Oneonta shot 43 percent from the field despite hitting only 2-of-15 from 3-point range. Cortland shot 40 percent overall and 26 percent (8-of-31) from the arc. Cortland made only 1-of-12 long-distance shots in the first half and was 7-of-19 in the second half.

Oneonta finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds, six by Schultz, and held a 20-9 advantage in second-chance points. Overall, Oneonta outrebounded Cortland, 44-25. The teams combined to commit only eight turnovers - five by Oneonta and three by Cortland.
