LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) scored a season-high 18 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped an 84-76 ODAC decision at Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (18-7, 12-4 ODAC), the conference regular season champion, will be the No. 1 seed in the 2018 ODAC Tournament. R-MC will play its quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in the Salem Coliseum. The Generals (16-9, 11-5) closed the game on a 21-13 run and will finish in a tie for second in the league standings.
Midulla hit seven field goals and went 3 for 3 from behind the arc. He also paced the team with six rebounds. Junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) had 15 points off the bench, junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) chipped in 14 points and junior Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) added 10 points off the bench for the Yellow Jackets.
After W&L tallied the first bucket of the game, Midulla made a three-pointer and a layup to give R-MC a 5-2 lead with 15:45 left in the first half. A three-point play by Williams extended the lead to 8-4 with 14:54 remaining. The Generals scored five straight points to go up 9-8 before a trey by Williams gave R-MC an 11-9 edge. After the Generals scored four straight, a layup by Adams and a trey by freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) gave the Yellow Jackets a 16-13 lead. W&L put together an 11-2 run to take a 24-18 advantage with seven minutes left. Turner scored in the lane to cap a 12-5 spurt as R-MC reclaimed the lead at 30-29 with 2:45 remaining. The Generals closed on a 9-2 run to take a 38-32 advantage at the break. Adams and Midulla both scored eight in the first half for the Yellow Jackets.
W&L put up four of the first six points in the second half to go ahead 42-34 with 18:15 left. R-MC scored nine straight points, sparked by a layup and trey from Midulla and capped by a pair of free throws by Nowell, to give the Yellow Jackets a 43-42 edge with 16 minutes remaining. The team would stay within two points of each other before the Generals took a 57-53 lead with 10:30 left. A three-pointer by Neeley tied the game at 63-63 before a 17-4 run gave the home team an 80-67 lead with 2:43 remaining. A bucket by Nowell cut it to six at 82-76 with 44 seconds left before W&L held on for the 86-76 win.
Anthony had four assists and four steals for R-MC.
