Montclair, NJ – Senior forward Jarett Bogus scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in the first half as Montclair State closed out its regular-season with an 89-65 victory over Rutgers-Camden at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.
Seniors Jovanni Chatham and Daniel Ramis each added 12 points as the Red Hawks (17-8, 11-7 NJAC) snapped a three-game losing streak as it heads into the postseason. MSU, the No. 4 seed in the NJAC Tournament, will host fifth-seeded Rowan on Saturday, February 17 in first-round action at 1pm.
It will be the second straight year that the two will square off in the opening round. Last season, Rowan registered an 81-69 victory in Glassboro. MSU won the two regular-season meetings – 95-78 at home in early December and 80-68 at Rowan on January 27.
Charlie Riccardi connected for 23 points, including six three-point field goals for Rutgers-Camden which closed out its season at 3-21, 1-17 in league play.
The Scarlet Raptors won the first meeting between the teams 72-71 back on January 10 however this time the game would not be nearly as close. MSU grabbed a 6-1 after a Ramis three-pointer and a 14-2 run ballooned the lead to 15 points. All three Red Hawk seniors accounted for the scoring with Bogus getting seven, Chatham four and Ramis three giving Montclair State a 25-10 lead with 12:54 to go.
Kaan Yilmaz recorded six straight points in an 11-0 spurt widening the Red Hawks advantage to 26 points. Myles Mitchell-White capped the run with a three-pointer making the score 42-16 with 6:13 to go before halftime. Bogus would register six more points, including a layup with 49 ticks remaining allowing MSU to go into halftime up 55-25.
Eddie Emedoh had 11 points with Yilmaz added 10 off the bench as Montclair had five players in double-digits. Bogus led the way with seven rebounds while Mitchell-White, Yilmaz and Ramis each getting five as MSU outrebounded the Raptors 38-20 in the game. The Red Hawks entered the night ranked No. 1 in Division III in rebounding margin (+11.4).
Mitchell-White, the nine-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, also had seven points and 10 assists. Montclair State shot 58 percent (33-of-57) from the field, including 9-of-18 from behind the arc.
