Adler Sparks Tigers Past Beavers

LOS ANGELESAustin DeWitz had a monster double double, Jacob Adler provided a huge lift off the bench and Caleb Yellin-Flaherty had a big game, leading the Occidental men's basketball team to a 63-52 road win at Caltech on Wednesday.

DeWitz was all over the boards and came up with big buckets during a huge second-half run that gave Oxy a double-digit lead. The junior finished with 20 points on 10 for 18 shooting, 16 rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal.

Adler, a first year guard from Portland, Ore., provided the hot shooting stroke off the bench against Caltech's 1-3-1 and 1-2-2 zone defenses, scoring 16 points on 4 for 6 shooting from beyond the 3-point line and 6 of 12 from the field. He scored 13 points in the second half, all of them in the final 11 minutes of the game.

Yellin-Flaherty had six rebounds, three at the offensive end of the floor, to go along with 14 points. He found seems inside Caltech's zone and was very effective as a passer with five assists and just one turnover. 

Jeevin Sandhu also came up solid off the bench, scoring six points with two rebounds and two assists. Zach Baines scored four points and Ryan Kaneshiro had three points and three assists.

Oxy's defense was outstanding against Caltech's drivers and shooters, limiting the Beavers to just 37 percent shooting for the game and 5 for 30 from beyond the 3-point line.

The Tigers also outrebounded the Beavers 43-32, including 14 offensive boards

Caltech's best effort came from sophomore guard Alec Andrews who was on his game attacking the basket with quickness against Oxy's bigger, longer defenders. He finished with a team-high 19 points on 8 for 15 shooting.

First year guard Gokul Srinivasaragav gave the Beavers a spark off the bench with 11 points, including 3 for 6 shooting from the 3-point line. 

Season Impact: With the win, Oxy improves to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in SCIAC, inching closer to securing a spot in the four-team SCIAC Tournament that determines the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action against Whittier on Satuday at 2 p.m. The Tigers play four of their remaining five games at home.
