NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the second time this season, the Saints of Marymount defeated the Captains of Christopher Newport by a two-point margin. Saturday's 68-66 final at the Freeman Center in front of 1,281 fans ended a five-game winning streak for CNU and a three-game losing skid for Marymount. The Saints, just 7-14 overall and 6-8 in the Capital Athletic Conference, scored the final five points of the game, including the game-winning three-pointer from junior Brandon Rogers with seven seconds to play.

The Captains, now 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the CAC, led by ten in the opening half before Marymount rallied to cut the lead to three at the intermission, 39-36. The second stanza saw seven lead changes, with the Captains pushing the advantage to 66-63 on two Aaron McFarland free throws with 2:10 to play. They would be the final points of the game for the Captains.

Marymount, who posted a 60-58 victory over CNU in Arlington on January 6th, cut the lead to one when Rogers went to the line with 1:43 on the clock and knocked down both attempts. The Captains would then miss a three-pointer and layup in their next two possessions, leading to Rogers' three-point winner from the top of the key. The Captains would get the ball back but couldn't convert on a driving layup in the final seconds as the Saints held on for the win.

"That was a great college basketball game," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "I give Marymount a whole lot of credit for coming in here and playing the way they did. I didn't think we played badly, we just didn't convert the way we have in the past. They just made more shots than we did in the end."

Senior big man Spencer Marin led the Captains in the scoring column with 16 points, 14 coming in the second half. Fellow senior McFarland finished with 14, and sophomore Cutch Ellis was also in double figures with a career-high 13, with 11 in the opening half. Marymount was led by sophomore Ibrahim Kamara, who tallied 20 points for the second time this season vs. CNU. Sophomore Ryan Albert came off the bench to score 18, and senior Dimitri Rucker netted ten.

Christopher Newport made just one of 11 three-point shots in the second half after nailing four of nine in the opening half. Marymount out-rebounded CNU, 34-29, and shot 48 percent for the game from the field (26 of 54). The Captains, who are now in a three-way tie for second place in the CAC standings with Salisbury and Mary Washington, will return to action on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center vs. Southern Virginia. Game time for the CAC battle is set for 7:30 p.m.
