Basketball Suffers 73-61 Loss to St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team suffered a 73-61 loss to the Golden Eagles of St Joseph's (L.I.) in a Skyline Conference matchup at Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
 
Senior center Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius)led Maritime with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
 
Maritime opened the game in front thanks to two three-pointers from freshman guard Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) to put them up 6-5 early on. St. Joseph's (L.I.) answered with an 8-0 run to go up 13-6. The Privateers struggled to keep pace with the Golden Eagles' hot shooting.
 
Maritime cut the lead to as low as five in the first half thanks to a three-pointer from Brendan McGovern(Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) but St. Joseph's (L.I.) was able to stay in front as they went into the break up 40-31.
 
After 20 minutes, Maritime shot just 37% going 11-30 while St. Joseph's (L.I.) connected on 57% including 6-10 from three.
 
St. Joseph's (L.I.) controlled the rest of the game going up by as many as 16. Maritime made one last push around the four-minute mark going on a 7-0 run that cut the lead down eight but it was not enough. St. Joseph's would eventually go on to win by a score of 73-61.
 
Maritime (8-9, 5-8 Skyline) will be back in action on Thursday, January 25th when they host Yeshiva in a Skyline Conference matchup at Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium beginning at 8:00 p.m.
 
St. Joseph's (L.I.) (4-12, 4-7 Skyline) will return to play on Sunday, January 28th, when they host Yeshiva at the Danzi Athletic Center beginning at 1:00 p.m.
