WAYNE, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University knocked down 16 three pointers—one shy of the single-game school record and the second most in school history—and shot 59 percent from both the field and three-point territory in a 101-85 New Jersey Athletic Conference road win on January 24 at The Rec Center.
 
Five players scored in double figures for the Gothic Knights, which improved to 15-4 and 9-3 in the NJAC. NJCU reached the century mark on the scoreboard for the first time since December 29, 2015 and did so in an NJAC game three years to the date of the last occurance—January 24, 2015. The Pioneers fell to 10-9 and 5-7 in the NJAC. NJCU shot 36-of-61 overall (.590) and 16-of-27 from three-point distance (.593) and made 13-of-17 from the line. It was NJCU's highest field goal percentage in a game in seven years.
 
Six players hit a three for NJCU which was one made three shy of the record of 17 at Rowan on January 27, 2007. Down seven (33-26) with 8:08 remaining in the first half, the Knights seized control of the game with a 20-1 run that saw the Knights grab a 46-34, 12-point lead with 2:58 left in the half.  
 
NJCU led by nine at halftime (49-40), pushed the margin into double figures in the opening minute of the second half, and was never challenged the rest of the night, leading by as many as 19 on two instances in the second half—each on threes by sophomore guard Jeff Haddock (Burlington Township, NJ/Willingboro) (67-48, 13:57 and 70-51, 12:16).
 
Sophomore power forward Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) exceeded 20 points for the 11th time this season and now with 752 career points, surpassed the 750 career point threshold in only his 48th career game. Toney scored 22 on an efficient 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-6 three-point accuracy. He added seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
 
Junior point guard Shaquan Worthy (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) had an awesome all-around effort, posting a near triple-double with 12 points (4-5 FG), 10 assists, seven rebounds and three steals. The 10 assists match his career high set on December 6 against Kean.
 
Junior shooting guard Robert Gordon (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), who missed the last four games with an ankle injury, returned to the lineup with a fury, reaching double figures for the first time as a Gothic Knight with 19 points in 16 minutes off the bench. He was 6-of-9 from the field, 2-of-5 from three-point range and 5-of-5 from the line.
 
Junior small forward James Julius (Linden, NJ/Linden) scored all 17 of his points in the first half, shooting 5-of-8 from the field—all from three-point distance. He chipped in six assists and three steals.
 
Also for NJCU, junior shooting guard Lavrone Green (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including both threes in took. Freshman center Chika Wosu (Jersey City, NJ/University Academy Charter)) added nine rebounds, six points and three assists and Haddockcollected eight points (3-7 FG, 2-5 3FG).
 
In defeat, the Pioneers had four players hit for double figures. WP senior forward Richy Espinal (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) had game highs of 23 points (7-13 FG, 7-12 FT) and 11 rebounds, with four assists, three steals and two blocks.
 
Also for the Pioneers, sophomore forward Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif.) scored 15 points and senior guard Dapo Badmos (Toronto, Canada) contributed 13 points and three assists before fouling out. Senior guard George Sapp (Sicklerville, N.J.) produced 10 points and seven assists. The Pioneers shot 46.2 percent overall (30-65) and 12-of-26 (.462) from three-point range.

  • NJCU improves to 80-3 all-time when scoring 100 points or more in a game.
  • NJCU scored 100+ points for the first time since a 119-116 double overtime neutral site loss to Buffalo State in the Bronx, N.Y. on December 29, 2015.
  • NJCU scored 100+ points in an NJAC game for the first time since a 100-70 win at Kean on January 24, 2015.
  • Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) scored in double figures for the 35th time in 48 career games.
  • Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) scored at least 20 points in a game for the 14th time in his career and the 11th time in 19 games this season.
  • Lavrone Green (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) reached double figures in scoring for the 15th time in 19 games as a Gothic Knight. For Green, it was the 32nd double digit scoring effort of his collegiate career.
  • James Julius (Linden, NJ/Linden) scored in double figures for the sixth time this season and for the 17th time in his career.
  • Robert Gordon (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia)'s previous career scoring high was nine at Albertus Magnus on December 16.
  • Shaquan Worthy (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) scored in double figures for the third time in his career—all this season.

In the third of three games this week, NJCU and The College of New Jersey meet for the second time this week when the series moves to Jersey City on Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. The Lions won on Monday night in Ewing, N.J., 67-60. It will be the 143rd known meeting during the NJAC era (since 1955-56). NJCU leads all-time, 76-46. TCNJ is now in first place in the league at 16-3 and 11-1 in the NJAC.
