WESTON, Mass. -- Junior Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted a double-double effort of 25 points and 10 rebounds as Regis scored 66 second half points to notch a 98-71 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Mount Ida Saturday afternoon on Higgins Court.
The host Pride (9-7, 6-2 GNAC) trailed 36-32 at the break before blistering the nets at a 67 percent clip (24-36) after intermission, as an Ademola dunk with 14:52 remaining in the contest capped an 11-0 run over a two-plus minute span that turned a 38-36 Regis deficit into a 47-38 advantage. The visiting Mustangs (8-8, 2-5 GNAC) closed back to within seven on a lay-in by senior Brendan Cunningham (Quincy, Mass.) just over a minute later, but the hosts used a decisive 16-4 run over a 4:15 stretch to extend their edge to 19 (65-49) on a three-pointer by senior Roger Hamel (Huntington Beach, Calif.) with 9:06 to play en route to their triumph.
Hamel finished with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in the win for the Pride, who received 12 points from freshman Juvens Dalger (Oakland Park, Fla.) as well as 10 points and three boards from senior Jawaun Lewis (Jacksonville, Fla.). Junior Tim Broom (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore Shaun Wingfield (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) combined for 16 points and nine boards on the day for Regis, which also collected six points from freshman Marc Trinidad (The Bronx, N.Y.) and six caroms from junior Shawn Wedderburn (The Bronx, N.Y.). The hosts shot 52 percent (32-59) from the field overall and connected for all six of their three-pointers in the final 20 minutes of play, as the Pride held a 53-46 rebounding advantage and recorded 24 assists in the contest.
Sophomore Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) recorded a double-double effort of 20 points and 17 rebounds in the setback for Mount Ida, which received 13 points from senior Kevin Conner (Mansfield, Mass.). Senior Errald Jordine (Stamford, Conn.) added eight points and seven boards for the Mustangs, who received eight points from fellow senior John Oliver (North Babylon, N.Y.) to go with six points and five assists from senior Jayson Clark (Austin, Tex.). Junior Dennis Ross (Portland, Maine) chipped in with five points and five rebounds for the Mustangs, who shot 34 percent (28-82) from the floor overall and connected at just a 25 percent clip (6-24) from behind the arc on the day.
Mount Ida hosts Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference outing on Tuesday evening at the Athletic Center that tips-off at 6:00 p.m., while Regis hosts Albertus Magnus in a GNAC clash on Thursday evening on Higgins Court beginning at 7:00 p.m.
