FINAL:              ALBERTUS MAGNUS 89, MOUNT IDA 81

NEWTON, Mass. --  Senior Jaqhawn Walters (Hartford, Conn.) notched a double-double effort of 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as Albertus Magnus posted an 89-81 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Mount Ida Thursday evening at the Athletic Center.

The visiting Falcons (10-4, 7-0 GNAC) broke open a two-point game by outscoring the host Mustangs (8-7, 2-4 GNAC) by a 15-8 margin over the final 6:24 of the opening half to take a 47-38 advantage at the break, and Albertus Magnus extended its edge to 18 points (68-50) on a pair of free throws by sophomore A'Jen English (Middletown, Del.) with 11:05 to play in the contest.  Mount Ida crept back to within nine on senior Jayson Clark's (Austin, Tex.) lay-in four minutes later, but a pair of foul shots by sophomore Jahmerikah Green-Younger (Norwalk, Conn.) that was followed by a Walters tip-in restored the visitors' double-digit lead, as the hosts got to within seven in the final 29 seconds of action but were unable to slice that deficit further.

Green-Younger joined Walters with a double-double performance of 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win for Albertus Magnus, which received 13 points and three boards from English along with 12 points and nine rebounds from senior Amir Maddred (Camden, N.J.).  Junior Ryan Pittman (Stratford, Conn.) and freshman Tyreek Perkins (New Haven, Conn.) combined for 17 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons, who shot 50 percent (31-62) from the field overall and scored 23 points at the charity stripe.  The visitors held a 51-35 rebounding advantage and converted 19 offensive boards into 28 second chance points to remain unbeaten in league action and sweep the two-game regular season series between the two schools.

Senior John Oliver (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored 20 points to lead a trio in double figures in the setback for Mount Ida, which received 13 points, five assists and four steals from Clark along with 12 points and three rebounds from senior Kevin Conner (Mansfield, Mass.).  Senior Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) each added eight points and four boards for the Mustangs, who received six points, six caroms and a pair of blocks from freshman Jonathan Friberg (North Attleboro, Mass.).  Junior Dennis Ross (Portland, Maine) chipped in with six points as well for the hosts, who shot 36 percent (27-74) from the floor and connected for seven three-pointers (four by Oliver), as Mount Ida converted 28 Albertus Magnus turnovers into 27 points.

Mount Ida heads to Weston, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Regis in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference outing that tips-off at 3:00 p.m., while Albertus Magnus hosts Lasell in a GNAC clash on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. that also begins at 3:00 p.m.
