Hot Start Not Enough as Maritime Drops League Decision to Sarah Lawrence in OT

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team was unable to get past the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons on Saturday afternoon, falling to their hosts by an 85-82 score in overtime from the Campbell Sports Center.
 
Maritime was led by sophomore Brendan McGovern(Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who registered 28 points, which was one shy of his career and season high set back in the season opener at home against York. Senior John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman)notched a season-high with 23 points as he led Maritime by knocking down 53% of his shots.
 
Senior Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) recorded his 10th straight double-double, to give him 12 on the season, as he picked up 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Michael Walker(Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) had nine points, while freshman Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) added four. Seniors Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) and Josh Raime(Elmont, N.Y./Holy Cross) each had three points, while freshman Chris Ruscillo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) added one field goal.
 
Liccese led Maritime with six assists, with Whelan one off the pace with five. Liccese also led the team with two steals through the 45-minute contest.
 
The Privateers opened the game at a torrid scoring pace and jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The lead swelled to 13 at 10:54 in the half, when McQuail knocked down a three-pointer to put Maritime ahead 23-10. However, Sarah Lawrence tied the game at 30, before a Liccese free throw late in the half sent the teams into the locker room tied at 39.
 
Neither side was able to muster more than a five-point lead in the second half, as the two sides remained locked at 38 points apiece in the second half. With the score tied at 77 after 40 minutes of play, Maritime went to overtime for the first time this season.
 
In the overtime session Sarah Lawrence opened the scoring with a free throw before Walker drilled a three-pointer to put Maritime up by two. Sarah Lawrence tied the game at both 80 and 82 before taking a two-point lead at 84-82 with less than a minute to go. The Gryphons added a free throw to take a three-point edge, before McGovern's final three-point look of the night didn't go.
 
Maritime (6-8, 3-7 Skyline) heads on the road again this Tuesday, when the team visits St. Joseph's (Bklyn) from the Hill Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. for a 7 p.m. start.
 
Sarah Lawrence (3-12, 2-8 Skyline) heads on the road to take on Mount St. Vincent for an 8 p.m. start from the Sharp Center in Riverdale.
