LEXINGTON, KY. – A pair of newcomers stepped to the forefront for Manchester University Saturday, Jan. 13.
First-year guard Jalmen Sullivan (Kankakee, Ill.) came off the bench and produced 10 points, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot in 13 minutes, and classmate Cornell Hampton (Griffith, Ind.) was just as active for Coach Gerad Good's side with his first collegiate double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to add to two assists and two blocked shots at Transylvania University's Clive M. Beck Center. In the end, though, the host Pioneers took advantage of a charity stripe parade that saw them hit on 21 of 34 attempts which in turn caused some depletion for the Spartans as four individuals fouled out including two starters in a 76-69 loss.
Despite TU scoring 22 of the game's first 31 points and holding as large as a 19-point lead, MU (2-13 overall, 0-8 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) whittled away at the deficit and managed to climb back to the final margin of seven points. Senior forward Kenny Doss, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) and junior guard Justin Lukens (Herrin, Ill.) were just off the double-digit scoring pace, ending with eight points apiece.
Manchester University closes out the first half of the 2017-18 HCAC schedule with a trip to Bluffton University Wednesday, Jan. 17. Game time on BU's Copeland Court at the Sommer Center is 7:30 p.m.
