More news about: Hope

The Hope College men's basketball team took the lead just once in the 197th edition of The Rivalry with Calvin College, but it was enough.

The Flying Dutchmen rallied for a 77-72 win Wednesday in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 3,595 after leading for only the final 60 seconds of the game. Junior forward Dennis Banks of Flint, Michigan (Powers Catholic HS) banked in a go-ahead jumper as the shot clock expired to break a 69-69 tie.

Behind a game-high 25 points from junior guard Jason Beckman of Shelby, Michigan (Shelby), the Flying Dutchmen (8-6 overall) moved into a second-place tie in the MIAA standings with a 2-1 league record.

Senior guard Dante Hawkins of Holland, Michigan (Holland) added 21 points and become the 40th Hope player to reach 1,000 points for his Flying Dutchmen career.

Calvin, which scored the first 13 points of the game, fell to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in MIAA play. Junior forward Austin Bykerk of Jenison, Michigan (Unity Christian) led four Knights in double figures with 15 points.

Derrick DeVries of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Covenant Christian) and Jason Walters of Coloma, Michigan (Coloma) both finished with 14 points.

Hope leads the all-time series 102-95.
