The Hamline men's basketball team had the top three scorers in the game Monday against Bethel at Hutton Arena. The Royals, however, took advantage of a wide edge at the free throw line and held off a late HU rally for a 73-63 decision at Hutton Arena. Dylan See-Rockers and Zach Smith had 18 points each and Isaac Brooks added 15 for Hamline, now 6-7 overall and 2-6 in the MIAC.
See-Rockers also had another big rebounding game with six and Smith was the top playmaker with seven assists. The senior guard made both of his three-point attempts and now leads the league from long distance with as 63.0 percentage (17-27). He is also second in the conference in assists with 59 and fifth in scoring at 16.1 points per game.
The Pipers started strong, scoring the first five points of the game. They led by as many as seven points in the first half before the Royals went on a 34-10 run to go into the locker room with a 44-28 lead.
Hamline pecked away in the second half, whittling the lead to six points at 64-58 with 1:21 remaining. HU was forced to foul and Bethel made enough shots to keep Hamline at bay. The balanced Bethel barrage had five players in dpouble figures, led by Bridgeport Tusler, who had 15.
HU returns to Hutton Wednesday night to face Carleton (7-5, 5-2 MIAC). Game time is 7:00 p.m. After that game, Hamline has a week off.
