NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – In a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up that saw plenty of ebb and flow Saturday, Jan. 6, a pair of streaks at the end of each half were the difference.
Visiting Hanover College managed a hard-fought 77-69 win over Manchester University at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The defending league champions and 2017-18 season favorites answered a mid-first half roll by their hosts with a 21-12 stretch over the final 8:16 for a 41-32 halftime advantage. Coach Gerad Good's squad continued to make things uncomfortable for its guests, battling back from a once 11-point deficit in the second 20 minutes to be down just one possession (66-63) with less than six minutes left. However, Hanover scored 11 of the game's final 17 points to ice the outcome.
Despite falling to 2-11 overall and remaining winless in loop action (0-6), several bright spots emerged for the Black and Gold on the Stan Weller Court honoring Coaches Hoffman and Wolfe. Junior guard Allen Jones (Chicago, Ill.) came off the bench for a 12-point effort in which he hit better than 60 percent overall and from beyond the arc; fellow Class of 2019 member Keiton Hall (Lansing, Mich.) resumed an impressive recent string canning three-or-more treys for a third straight appearance as part of a nine-point, three-rebound effort in a back-up role; starting guard Adrian Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.), continuing the positive theme from the junior class contingent, tallied a double-double, his first in collegiate competition, tallying 19 points and 11 rebounds to go with a blocked shot and a pair of assists; and freshman guard Matt Westman (Michigan City, Ind.) turned in a 10-point total.
MU continues its league slate Wednesday, Jan. 10, beginning the yearly series against rival Anderson University. Tip-off time at SWA is 7:30 p.m.
