Basketball's Trip to Purchase Soured by the Panthers, 82-71

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team traveled to nearby Purchase College on Saturday afternoon for a Skyline Conference matchup and fell to its host Panthers by an 82-71 score from the Purchase College Gymnasium.
 
Senior Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) led the Privateers with his ninth double-double of the season as he had his second-highest point total of 2017-18 with 25 on the game while adding 16 rebounds.
 
Sophomore Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) was second on the team with 18 points, while senior John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) also had double-figures with 12 points to go along with three assists as both he and MacDonald were tied with sophomore Michael Walker(Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) fot the team lead in helpers. Walker also added eight points with a pair of rebounds.
 
Junior James Bonner (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) had four points and two assists, while rookie Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) tallied two points and three boards. Senior Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers with a bucket and was second on the team with five rebounds. Sophomore Jermaine Brathwaite (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) had a pair of steals off the bench.
 
Purchase opened the game with the first five points, before MacDonald connected on a layup with 18:09 left in the opening stanza. Minutes later it was Walker to convert on a jumper and pulled Maritime within one at 7-6 with 15:50 to go. The Panthers rattled off of eight unanswered to open a 15-6 lead.
 
With the Panthers leading by a 25-11 score, McGovern connected on a layup and MacDonald went 2-for-2 from the stripe to pull the Privateers back within 10. However it was Purchase to go on another run to take a 32-17 lead with 5:11 left in the period.
 
McGovern took a pass from Bonner at the 4:37 mark and drained a three-pointer, then knocked down another long-distance shot off a dish from MacDonald. The Privateers capped off the 8-0 run with MacDonald knocking down a pair from the line. McGovern closed out the period with a layup as the Privateers went into the locker room trailing by a 41-30 score.
 
It was McGovern to open the scoring in the second half with another three-pointer, but the Panthers continued to keep Maritime at a distance with back-to-back three-pointers of their own. Liccese converted on a three, followed by a layup from Walker to pull Maritime back within nine at 47-38.
 
The Privateers were only able to keep the deficit around 10 throughout the majority of the second half, and were unable to get the key defensive stop to slice into the lead. MacDonald closed out the scoring with a layup in the final Maritime possession to cap off the scoring at 82-71.
 
Maritime (5-6, 2-5 Skyline) will resume Skyline Conference play on Monday evening, when the Privateers play host the Merchant Marine Mariners at 7 p.m. from the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
 
Purchase (8-2, 5-1 Skyline) heads on the road this coming Wednesday, as the Panthers will make their way to Long Island to visit the Farmingdale Rams at 7 p.m.
