BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College men's basketball team closed out their season-high five game road trip with an 85-69 win at Southern Virginia in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.

The 13th ranked Spartans improve to 13-0 as they are now just one of four teams that remain unbeaten in all of Division III.

How It Happened

• The Spartans got off to a blistering start as they jumped on the Knights with an 11-4 start. Southern Virginia answered with a 9-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. The Knights eventually built the lead to as many as seven at 23-16 with 12:10 left in the half. The Spartans battled back to tie the game at 28 on a Jason Bady three pointer. The Knights recaptured the lead and pushed the lead to four but York responded with a Zach Novick lay up and a Bady three to take a 36-35 lead.

• Southern Virginia tied the game at 36 but York scored nine of the next 13 points to take a 45-40 lead to the intermission. Southern Virginia dominated the play in the paint, holding a 24-14 advantage inside in the first half while they also outscored York 11-4 in points off turnovers.

• The Spartans used the early stages of the second half to start building on their lead. The Green and White increased the advantage to 11 on a four-point play from Matt Scamuffo as York led 56-45 just under four minutes into the second half. Novick hit a lay up at the 13:24 mark, pushing York's lead to 16 at 63-47.

• The York lead remained in double figures until Alec Johnson hit a fast break lay up at the 8:29 mark. York's lead vacillated between eight and 11 points over the next six minutes as they held the Knights at arm's length. Scamuffo hit a three, pushing the lead back into double figures with 2:05 left and the Spartan advantage would not fall below 11 the rest of the way.

The Spartans lead the all-time series 6-3 as they have won four in a row against the Knights … York is now 2-3 at the barn in Buena Vista … York is now 13-0 for the first time in the 49-year history of the Spartan men's basketball program … York won by double figures for the first time on the season-high five game road trip … the 16 point win marks the larges margin of victory since the 17 point win over Frostburg State on December 6 … the Knights entered the game fourth in the country with a plus 13.2 rebounds per game margin but the Spartans neutralized that as they outrebounded the Knights 42-28, York's second largest rebounding margin of the year (17 @ Washington & Lee) … York's 11 three point field goals marks the eighth time they have reached double figures in three pointers made in a game … York was again solid at the free throw line as they converted 70% or better for the third straight game and the fourth time in the last five games … York was credited with a season-low two steals in the win … The Spartans forced just nine turnovers in the win and York has forced just 17 turnovers in their last two games … York is now 7-0 on the road … York is now 9-0 when leading at the half … York has held eight opponents below 45% shooting from the field in a game … Southern Virginia shot just 42.9% from the free throw line continuing a trend of Spartan opponents shooting poorly from the line … York has had 10 opponents shoot under 70% for a game while the Spartans have been over 70% in seven games … York is 9-0 when making more three pointers than their opponents … York has put at least three players in double figures in all 13 of their games this season … for just the second time this year, an opponent had more assists than the Spartans (19-15) … senior Matt Scamuffo had 23 points in the win as he is now all alone in 16th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,188 points as he passed Rawle Phillips (1,175 points in 1985-89) in the victory … Scamuffo is 20 points behind Julian Watson (2008-09, 2010-13) for 15th place … fellow senior Dalton Myers continues to sit in 14th place as he now has 1,248 points … Myers is 26 points behind John Ely (1998-2002) for 13th place … Scamuffo's 23 points marked his fifth 20-plus point performance of the year and is one short of his season-high 24 set in the season opener against Pitt-Bradford … junior Jason Bady was fantastic in the win as he pulled in a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with a career-high tying 19 points … Bady's 19 points are a season high and marks the sixth time this year he has reached double figures for York … Bady has pulled in 29 rebounds in the last three games while he has scored 38 points … sophomore Jared Wagner tossed in 12 points as he has reached double figures in eight games while he had a season-high tying six assists … Wagner has six assists in four games this year … senior standout Blayde Reich had his four-game double-double streak snapped by foul trouble as he had seven points and five rebounds in just 18 minutes play … that is the first time this year that Reich has failed to reach double figures in scoring … sophomore Joey Polczynski pulled in a career-high eight rebounds in 23 minutes of action for York.
