Highlights
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Daron Hoges, Jr. drained the go-ahead baseline jumper with 33 seconds left in overtime, and Drew Muniz sealed the result with a block on the other end as the University of New England edged out Dean College, 103-102, in men's basketball action Sunday afternoon (Dec. 10) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The teams went back-and-forth in the extra session, with two ties followed by four lead-changes. A three-pointer by Gavin Dibble made it 101-100 in favor of the hosts with 1:23 to go, only to have Jordan Booker net a corner jumper with 52 seconds on the clock and swing the Bulldogs back in front (102-101). It was Booker's attempt that Muniz deflected to come up short, and Dibble tipped the rebound to a teammate who was fouled with 0.1 remaining.
The sides had combined for just seven points over the last four minutes of regulation to end up at 94-all.
Dibble led the way for the Nor'easters (3-6) with 18 points, which included four baskets from deep. Muniz and Ryan Matthews chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively, largely behind three treys apiece. Both Drew Coveney and Hoges added 10 points; Coveney also dished out seven assists, and Hoges shared the team-high of six rebounds with Matt Hobbs.
UNE was plus-27 scoring the ball from behind the arc (45-18), helping negate Dean's 14-point advantage at the free throw line (26-12) and 52-34 scoring edge in the paint.
Randolf Thurman paced all players with 19 points and eight assists for the Bulldogs (5-4). Armani Baker contributed 18 points and corralled 19 rebounds, while Booker's 18 points came with four steals. Marquez Walls tallied 13 of his 15 points in the 2nd period prior to fouling out moments before OT. Malik Brown also had 15 points and grabbed seven boards.
The Nor'easters used an 8-0 run to establish a 24-12 cushion in the 1st stanza, but needed a late triple by Matthews to hold a 54-49 lead at halftime.
UNE managed to stretch the margin to 14 (72-58) during the initial stages of the 2nd, but Dean stayed within striking distance and a 10-1 spurt by the Bulldogs just before the midway mark of the half nudged the visitors in front (82-80).
Big Blue will break for nearly three weeks and then visit Saint Joseph's College of Maine on December 30 (1 p.m.).
