ROCKFORD, IL - The Benedictine University men's basketball team won an early battle of conference unbeatens on the road at Rockford Wednesday night.
Benedictine 75, Rockford 70
• The first 20 minutes were extremely close
• Tied 7-7, Zach Gorney delivered a three-pointer as part of five straight for Benedictine
• Gorney scored all five points in the spurt, making the score 12-7 with 15:14 remaining in the first half
• Rockford utilized a 9-2 run to take a 21-17 advantage with 8:26 to go in the half
• The hosts led 30-26 at the 3:31 mark but Benedictine closed the half on a 9-4 run to lead 37-34 at the break
• Gorney splashed home a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first to account for the margin
• Gorney scored 14 points in the half while Jens Soderholm ripped down 14 rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench
• The opening 20 minutes of play featured eight ties and five lead changes with neither team leading by more than five
• The second half featured more of the same as neither team led by more than a single point until a layup from Eric Grygo made the score 44-41 Benedictine with 15:27 remaining
• Rockford quickly scored five straight to continue the back-and-forth
• Down 57-54 with 9:01 left, Benedictine scored six straight, taking the lead on a Kejuan Glosson basket at the 8:09 marker
• Benedictine did not trail again the rest of the way
• The hosts pulled within a single point with 1:02 left, but Benedictine crashed the glass to pull away, sealing the game on a transition basket from Kenny Bogus following a long rebound in the game's closing seconds
• The contest featured 13 ties and 13 lead changes with the largest lead either way sitting at five points
• Benedictine has now won four in a row and is the only NACC team without a loss
• Soderholm led five players in double figures with 21 points, adding 18 rebounds for a second straight double-double
• Gorney finished with 14 points with Grygo notching 13 along with eight rebounds
• Brayden Olson picked up 11 with seven assists and six rebounds while Bogus notched 10
• Benedictine shot 53.3 percent in the second half, finishing the game at 43.9 percent
• Benedictine held a 47-39 edge on the glass and scored 42 points in the paint
• Alexakos reeled in 11 rebounds, her third double-digit rebound game
Benedictine (4-3, 4-0 NACC) is of for finals until a home date with Wisconsin Lutheran on December 16
