Pearson's Strong Debut Not Enough for Hood in Upset Bid

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Anthony Pearson scored 24 points off the bench in his collegiate debut but No. 11 Lycoming escaped BB&T Arena with an 83-77 win over the Blazers in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.

  • Pearson, who missed the first six games of the season, hit 7 of 11 field goals and went 8 of 9 at the free throw line. 
  • Jared Ruiz scored a season-high 20 points hitting 6 of 10 3-point field goals. 
  • Evan Wang had four assists and three steals. 
  • Daniel Wegener paced Hood with six rebounds. 
  • Hood went 12 of 29 from 3-point range (41 percent) and 15 of 18 at the free throw line (83 percent). The Blazers dominated the rebounding battle 47-32. 

How it Happened

  • After the Blazers took a 39-36 halftime lead, the second half featured 16 lead changes and six ties. Pearson tied the score at 74-74 with 1:21 left before Alex Newbold gave Lycoming a two-point lead with 53 seconds left on the clock. Michael Riley found Ruiz for his sixth 3-pointer of the afternoon with 33 seconds to play to swing the lead back to Hood 77-76. Wallace scored with 21 seconds left off a pass from Newbold and the lead changed again, 78-77 Lycoming. The bucket proved to be the game-winner and the Warriors pulled away down the stretch with free throws. 
  • In the first half, the Blazers took a 13-11 lead when Pearson was fouled on a putback and converted the and-one with 11:31 left.
  • A 14-5 run by Lycoming put the Warriors ahead 25-18 on a 3-pointer by Tamer Tamer with 7:52 to go. 
  • Two free throws by Pearson capped a 16-2 run for the Blazers that made it 34-27 in favor of Hood four minutes later. 

Notes

  • T.J. Duckett hit 5 of 6 off the bench from 3-point range on his way to a Lycoming-high 16 points. Newbold added 14 points, Ronald Jefferson had 13 and Damani Myers pitched in with 10. 
  • Lycoming was 12 of 25 on 3-point field goals (48 percent). The Warriors had a 29-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
