HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior George Sapp(Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) poured in a career-high 18 points to lead all scorers, helping the William Paterson men's basketball team (2-3)come away with a 72-59 victory at Centenary (1-3) in non-conference action Nov. 25.

Sapp's 18 points came on 58 (7-12) percent shooting, including four three-pointers. Sophomore Henry Voorhees(South Orange, N.J./Columbia) chipped in his first career double-double, scoring 11 points and securing 11 rebounds, while junior Peter Martinez (Stockton, Calif./Dublin) added 17 points. Senior Richy Espinal(Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) filled up the stat sheet as well, scoring eight points, grabbing eight boards, dishing out five assists and recording three steals.

The numbers were very similar in the shooting column, as WP shot 44 (16-36) percent from the field while Centenary shot 40 (10-25) percent. The difference came on the glass, however, where the Pioneers held a 44-34 advantage in rebounding to help them earn a 14-6 edge in second-chance points.

The Cyclones opened the scoring with a four-point play 26 seconds into the contest, but the Pioneers answered immediately with a three-point basket by sophomore Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo)just four seconds later. After two lead changes, William Paterson took the lead on a Voorhees layup (9-8, 16:26) and never looked back. The Pioneers led by as many as 18 points in the first half (45-27, 0:27) after Martinez drilled a three-pointer, and WP took that advantage into the halftime break.

The Cyclones outscored the Pioneers during the second-half, 32-27, but the effort was not enough. Centenary pulled within three points twice, threatening with a layup at the 3:09 mark of the stanza to make it 61-58, but junior Saint Simeon Beaubrun (Irvington, N.J./Columbia) sparked a 7-0 run with a layup to put the game out of reach for good.

The Pioneers will look for their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory when they return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 29, as they travel to New Jersey City at 8:00 p.m.
