SALEM, Va. - Junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) scored a season-high 18 points, including a career-best five three-pointers, as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team posted a 71-60 victory at Roanoke Wednesday evening in the ODAC opener for both clubs.
The Yellow Jackets (4-1, 1-0 ODAC) won their fourth straight contest. R-MC has won 16 of the past 17 and 30 of the past 32 meetings with the Maroons (4-1, 0-1 ODAC).
R-MC head coach Josh Merkel registered his 100th career victory. He had 66 wins in four seasons at Salisbury and has 34 in his third season with the Yellow Jackets.
Adams went 6 for 9 from the floor and was 5 for 6 on treys. Sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) had 14 points and has scored in double figures in each game this season. Junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) and sophomore Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) both tallied 10.
RC jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before Adams scored 11 straight, with a layup and three treys, to give R-MC an 11-5 lead less than four minutes into the contest. It was a lead the Yellow Jackets would not relinquish. The Maroons rallied for six straight points to level the score at 11-11 with 13:45 remaining in the half. Freshman Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) hit a pair of three-pointers in a 17-5 spurt as the Yellow Jackets took a 28-16 lead with 5:50 left. RC closed the half on a 16-5 run as R-MC took a slim 33-32 lead at the break. The Yellow Jackets hit 7 of 14 shots behind the arc in the first half. Adams paced the visitors with 11 points. Turner had three assists and three rebounds to lead R-MC. The Maroons held a 20-8 advantage on points in the paint.
Midulla sank a three-pointer to cap a 9-4 run for R-MC to start the second half, giving the Yellow Jackets a 42-36 lead with 17:45 left in the second half. R-MC led by five before a trey by Midulla and a layup by junior Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) pushed the advantage to 10 at 50-40 with 12 minutes remaining. The Maroons scored five straight to make it 50-45 before a pair of layups by junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg) capped a 7-1 run as R-MC took a 57-46 lead with 8:15 remaining. RC cut it to 57-50 before back-to-back three-pointers by Adams pushed the Yellow Jacket advantage to 13 at 63-50 with 3:45 left. R-MC would score its final eight points from the free throw line, with Bays going 4 for 4, as the Yellow Jackets recorded a 71-60 victory.
Turner led R-MC with six assists. Midulla, Williams and senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) each had four rebounds to pace the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 2, with a 2 p.m. home ODAC contest against Lynchburg in Crenshaw Gym.
