Hood's Wegener Overpowers Alvernia in Conference Opener

READING, Pa. - Hood College held Alvernia scoreless for the final five minutes and 48 seconds but needed the final two of Daniel Wegener's career-high 21 points to take the lead late in a 68-65 win.

  • The Golden Wolves had no answer for the Blazers' 6-foot-8 big man. Wegener hit 7 of 8 both from the field and the free throw line in a season-high 24 minutes of action. The junior added five rebounds and three assists.
  • Jared Ruiz added 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting. He led Hood with six rebounds. 
  • Michael Riley netted 11 points, going 4 of 8 from the field and 2 of 4 from 3-point range. 
  • Kobe Butler came off the bench for five assists and two steals. 
  • Hood (2-4, 1-0) shot 60 percent in the second half. 

How it Happened

  • Hood closed the game with an 11-0 run to erase a 65-57 deficit. Tyler Evans started the comeback with a 3-pointer with 5:32 to go. Neither team scored again for over three minutes. 
  • Wegener took over down the stretch, scoring on three straight possessions for the Blazers. He scored with 2:02 left, then again at 1:22 to cut it to 65-64. After the Golden Wolves came up empty, it was Wegener again with 34 seconds left for the 66-65 lead. 
  • Butler stole the ball in the backcourt and found Ruiz to ice the game eight seconds later. 
  • Hood forced Alvernia (2-3, 0-1) to miss its final 10 shots, including seven 3-pointers. 
  • The Golden Wolves opened the game with a 13-5 run and led 26-16 after Nick Youngkin's fourth 3-point field goal with 8:01 left in the half. Wegener scored the game's next six points before the Blazers settled for a 33-28 deficit at the half. 

Notes

  • Youngkin and Calil Moultrie both scored 18 points for the Golden Wolves. Moultrie also had eight assists. Anthony Hedgepeth added 11 points. 
  • Alvernia's bench played just 22 total minutes. Both Butler and Wegener played more than that off the bench themselves for Hood. 
  • Hood outrebounded Alvernia 37-34. 
  • The Golden Wolves shot 37 3-pointers and made just 10 (27 percent). All the outside shots resulted in just three free throw attempts in the game. The Blazers, meanwhile, went 12 of 16 at the line (75 percent).
