UMHB men fall to Trinity 74-66

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team grabbed an early lead but could not hold off Trinity's late barrage of three-pointers as the Tigers posted a 74-66 victory over the Cru Saturday night in Belton. UMHB drops to 3-1 on the year with the loss. Trinity improves to 3-2 on the year with the win.

 

The Cru scored the game's first seven points and opened up a quick 13-4 lead. Trinity answered and took a 20-18 lead. The Tigers were up by as many as seven points in the first half before settling for a 34-31 lead at halftime. UMHB battled back for a 49-47 lead and the two teams would trade the lead until the Tigers hit three-pointers for three of their next five scores and led by as many as 11 points. LaKendric Hyson hit a three and Sam Moore hit a jumper around two Trinity free throws to account for the final margin.

 

Hyson led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on 11-18 shooting for UMHB. He added seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Moore added 11 points off the bench and Justin Gammill grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The Cru hit just 2-23 from three-point range and shot 34 percent from the field as a team. UMHB did out rebound the Tigers 47-43 in the loss.

 

Danny Rivara and Matt Jones led a balanced Trinity scoring attack with 13 points apiece. Isaiah Specks chipped in 12 points and Jayden Holden and Brooks Mays scored 11 points apiece. Stephen Molina recorded seven assists for the Tigers and Rivara and Specks grabbed eight boards apiece. Trinity shot 32 percent from beyond the arc and hit 39 percent from the field as a team.

 

The Cru men return to action with a 7:00 PM non-conference game at Southwestern University in Georgetown on Monday. UMHB will then open American Southwest Conference play with road games at LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist University next weekend.
