Jason Beckman rewrote the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic record book while helping the Hope College men's basketball team rebound for an 89-83 victory at Aquinas College on Saturday.

The junior guard from Shelby, Michigan (Shelby HS) set six tournament records and matched one school record en route to a career-high 44 points and being named the Classic's Most Valuable Player.

"It was amazing," head coach Greg Mitchell said of Beckman's 40-minute performance. "What a great effort. He did a lot of things well."

Beckman set tournament records for:

* 44 points in a game, shattering previous mark of 32

* 28 points in one half in the second half

* 14 field goals made in a game

* 13 free throws made in a game

* 1.000 free-throw percentage (13/13)

* 32.5 points per game average

Beckman also matched Jim Vander Hill's 56-year-old record for most free throws without a miss. Vander Hill went 13-13 in 1961 against Taylor, Indiana.

Hope evened its record at 2-2 on the season after overcoming an eight-point halftime deficit. The Flying Dutchmen outscored Aquinas 49-35 as Beckman led the charge.

"We ran a few things for him to get him more touches," Mitchell said. "The credit really goes to him being really aggressive without the basketball. He was coming hard around screens and credit to our guys finding him in advantageous situations."

Beckman's 44 points equaled the fourth-most in a game by a Flying Dutchmen player. Floyd Brady scored 44 against Lake Forest, Illinois. The school record of 51 belongs to Dan Shinabarger from a 1970 game against Albion College.

Beckman became Hope's sixth Hall of Fame Classic MVP. He joined a club that includes Peter Bunn (2011), Derek Van Solkema (2006), Andy Phillips (2005), Don Overbeek (2002), and Joel Holstege (1997).

Beckman also totaled 21 points in an 88-61 loss to Cornerstone on Friday.

Against Aquinas (4-6), Beckman shot 70 percent from the field (14-20) for the game. He made seven second-half field goals, including three 3-pointers, and 11 second-half free throws

The Flying Dutchmen also received 17 points and six assists off the bench from sophomore guard Riley Lewis of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston).

Junior center Rob McGivney of Burr Ridge, Illinois (Timothy Christian) chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
