FINAL:              SALVE REGINA 64, MOUNT IDA 54

NEWPORT, R.I. --  Senior Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) scored 26 points, grabbed four rebounds and recorded three steals to lead Salve Regina to a 64-54 non-league college men's basketball victory over Mount Ida Tuesday evening at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

The host Seahawks (1-2) used a closing 14-5 run over the final 6:58 of the half to turn a four-point lead into a 37-24 advantage at the break, as Salve Regina extended that edge to as much as 16 points on three occasions after intermission.  The visiting Mustangs (1-2) sliced their deficit to nine (63-54) with 35 seconds to play in the contest on a three-pointer by senior Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.), but that was as close as Mount Ida would come in the closing seconds, as a free throw by junior Kevin Mannix (Barrington, R.I.) iced the hosts' triumph.

Sophomore Gabe Granberry (Dorchester, Mass.) added nine points and seven rebounds in the win for the Seahawks, who received eight points, nine boards, three assists and three steals from freshman Kevin Kelly (Valhalla, N.Y.) along with nine caroms from Mannix.  Salve Regina, which began the game shooting at a 59 percent clip over the opening 12-plus minutes of play, owned a 12-1 scoring advantage at the foul line along with a 44-33 rebounding edge on the night, as the hosts scored 24 points off of 23 Mustang turnovers.

DeFillippi finished with 21 points (including five three-pointers), five rebounds and four assists in the setback for Mount Ida, which received seven points from senior John Oliver (North Babylon, N.Y.).  Senior Errald Jordine (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Jonathan Friberg (North Attleboro, Mass.) combined for 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs, who received five points and four assists from sophomore Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) as well as four boards each from senior Brendan Cunningham (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Nunez (Dorchester, Mass.).  Both teams shot 39 percent from the field on identical 23-59 efforts from the floor, as the visitors connected for seven three pointers overall.
