DOYLESTOWN (PA) -- The Delaware Valley University men's basketball team got into the win column with a 78-73 home victory over visiting Penn State Berks on Tuesday night.
The Aggies moved to 1-3 on the young season despite being bit by the injury bug early on and forced to play with just nine healthy players in this game. The Lions fell to 0-4.
DelVal jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, highlighted by a trey from freshman Damian Washington, before Penn State went on an 11-2 run to take a two point lead. From there, the two teams played to 10 ties in the first half, including the last coming at 30-30 with 3:50 remaining before the break.
The Aggies went on to score nine of the final 10 points in the stanza, seven of which came off the bench as Dom Stiefel connected from beyond the arc and JaDon Robinson hit a pair of free throws followed by a nice layup inside. DelVal went into the locker room up, 39-31.
The Aggies extended their lead to nine early in the second before the Lions went on a 12-3 run that spanned six minutes and tied the game at 47-47 with 12:18 left in regulation. Matt Seip scored six points, all in the paint, during the spurt.
DelVal quickly responded as Washington earned a pair of free throws and converted both before he and Joe Russell each got loose for monster dunks off of forced turnovers. That sparked what would be a 27-10 stretch that extended the Aggies lead to 74-57 with just over three minutes to play, and ultimately put the game out of reach. Robinson and Alex Matsinye combined for 15 points during that spurt and Washington ended it with another emphatic slam.
Penn State put together a run at the end, but it wasn't enough as DelVal held on for the 78-73 victory.
Washington finished with a team-high 23 points to go with seven boards and one steal while Matsinye also grabbed seven boards and added 15 points. Robinson finished with a career-high 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting and pitched in three assists and a steal. Joe Russel pitched in eight points and six boards while Ryan Naccarato had eight points and four assists.
The Lions were led by Dave Polisano's game-high 24 points followed by a 13-point, six-rebound effort from Robbie McHugh. Seip added 14 points and five boards.
The Aggies will be off for the Thanksgiving break before heading to Hood College for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, November 25.
