NEWBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-0) rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Mount Saint Mary College (0-2) 84-81 on the road. Sophomore guard Danny Delsol-Lowry(Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bears. Junior forward Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) and freshman forward Dante Viskovich(Massena, N.Y./Massena) each scored 13 for Potsdam, which is off to its best start since 2008-09.
The Bears and Knights traded leads and kept the score tight over the first 11 minutes, but a short burst by Mount Saint Mary gave them a 27-21 lead with 8:15 to play. Potsdam answered with a 10-4 run to tie the game at 31-31 at 4:44. A layup from freshman Tyreke Guthrie (Portmore, Jamaica/Springfield Gardens) and a pair of free throws from junior guard Tanner Stone (Schroon Lake, N.Y./Schroon Lake) gave the Bears 33-31 and 35-34 advantages as time ticked down. However, the Knights rallied for a 9-0 run to take a 43-35 lead into the break. Viskovich had nine points, while Guthrie and Delsol-Lowry had six points apiece through 20 minutes.
Potsdam opened the final half on an 11-0 run to grab a 46-43 lead. Onabor and freshman guard Colby Simpson (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) each opened the stretch with 3-pointers. Junior forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) put the Bears back in front with a layup and Delsol-Lowry ended the run with another bucket at 17:19. The teams were never separated by more than two points over the next seven minutes. At 10:01, Guthrie sank two free throws to give the Bears a 62-59 lead. Potsdam then built leads of 65-61 and 70-66. Two more free throws from Kane at 5:42 gave the Bears their largest lead of the half at 75-70, but they couldn't pull away from Mount Saint Mary. A 10-5 Knight run knotted the score at 80 with 1:20 left. Onabor gave Potsdam an 82-80 lead 20 seconds later. It was a battle from the charity stripe the rest of the way and the Bears added two more points to finish out the 84-81 win.
Potsdam shot nearly 46-percent from the floor, including 12-33 from 3-point range. The Bears also edged the Knights on the boards 41-40.
Simpson, Kane and junior guard Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) each contributed nine for Potsdam and Guthrie finished with eight.
Tyler McDine led Mount Saint Mary with a game-high 23 points and Connor Bacci had 17. Gerard Nocera scored 13 and Daniel Wolff added 10 to round out the leaders.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 28, when they head across town to face Clarkson University at 8 p.m.
