Boll's big night fuels close win for Tommies

Senior Ryan Boll had 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and sank two free throws with 31 seconds to go for a 71-68 lead in Friday's night's 73-68 Tommie men's basketball victory over Dickinson (Pa.) in the season-opening game for both teams in Marietta, Ohio.

The Tommies overcame 15 turnovers and shot 50 percent from the floor, including 8-of-18 from 3-point range. UST posted a 42-25 reboundng advantage.

Junior G.T. Johnson scored a career-high 12 points, Erik Davis added 11 points, and freshman guard Burt Hedstrom scored 10.

The game was tied 31-31 at half, but UST used an 18-4 run to build a 13-point lead with 10:43 to play. Dickinson countered with a 20-9 run to pull within 65-63 with under 4:00 left.

St. Thomas made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:41, including a pair by Boll to push the lead to 71-68 with 31 seconds left in regulation. Dickinson had a potential tying 3-point attempt bounce high off the rim and it fouled UST on the rebound with :01 remaining.

St. Thomas pays host Marietta on Saturday night.
