WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (11-14, 7-11 NJAC) closed out its season with a 76-65 Senior Night victory against Kean (1-24, 1-17 NJAC) Feb. 15.
Senior guard Zach Frick (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) matched his season best with 25 points while dishing out four assists. Senior forward Richy Espinal (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) added 22 tallies to his career-high 14 rebounds and six steals, while senior guard Joseph Taylor (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) had 13 points. Senior guard Galen Smith (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway Tech) chipped in 10 tallies.
The Pioneers never trailed, jumping out to a 26-17 lead less than 13 minutes into the contest on their way to a 43-34 halftime margin. WP expanded its advantage to as many as 18 (66-48, 12:05) during the second half as the Pioneers owned a 20-12 edge in points scored off turnovers and a 15-8 advantage in second-chance points.
Sophomore forward Mike Summerer paced the Cougars with 23 points and 17 rebounds.
Prior to the game, WP honored its seniors Espinal, Frick, Fredrik Hagbarth (Stockholm, Sweden/Kungsholmens Gymnasium), Tyler Iozia (Rochelle Park, N.J./Paramus Catholic), Turell McClendon (Newark, N.J./Piscataway Tech), Smith, Taylor and Craig Tomkins (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere).
