BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In a battle of the top half of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) teams, the No. 2 seed College at Brockport faced off against the No. 3 SUNY Oneonta, with the Golden Eagles downing the Red Dragons, 89-86.

Brockport improves to 18-5 on the year and have a 13-3 mark in league play while the Red Dragons fall to 14-9 and 11-5 in the SUNYAC. 

Three Golden Eagles had big scoring day's to lead the Green and Gold to victory. Clifton Lyerly and Devonn Gavin each poured in 22 points, while Hamed Shamseldin added 20. Lyerly also grabbed five rebounds and four steals, with Shamseldin picking up six boards and dishing four assists. Freshman Justin Summers also had a strong showing, in just nine minutes of action, posting 12 points. 

The contest got off to a slow start with a pair of Lyerly buckets posting an early 5-4 Brockport lead. After briefly relinquishing their advantage, the Brockport offense began to pick up, embarking on a 7-0 run. Gavin and Summers both connected from the floor, while Cordell Torres capped off the streak with a pair of free throws to post a 17-13 lead.

Maintaining control, head coach Greg Dunn's squad held tight to their lead. After the Red Dragon's cut it to two, the Golden Eagles pieced together another run, this one eight unanswered points, sparked by a Gavin triple and capped off by a Lyerly layup for the 43-22 lead with 3:27 to play.

The Green and Gold couldn't silence the Red Dragons to close the half, as Oneonta posted a 9-3 run finish the stanza. Lyerly was sure to have the final say however, weaving through the lane for the buzzer beater bucket to give Brockport a 37-31 lead at the break.

The Golden Eagles came out strong in the second half, posting a quick five points with a Shamseldin trey and a Matthew Smith layup. The Brockport lead quickly evaporated as a 13-0 Red Dragon run erased the Golden Eagle advantage.

With the Brockport lead gone, the Golden Eagles had to fight to keep pace with a charging Oneonta squad. Gavin came up big on back-to-back offensive possessions, but it was a Shamseldin triple that regained a two-possession lead for the Green and Gold at the 10:26 mark.

The tempo heated up, with both offensives turning up their scoring. The Green and Gold held to a comfortable lead, with back-to-back Lyerly scores giving Brockport a 79-70 edge under five minutes to play.

The Red Dragons, who were ready to prove they're a contender in the SUNYAC, pieced together an 11-1 run to erase the Brockport lead with 22 seconds to play. Shamseldin came up big for the Golden Eagles, hitting a layup to regain the Brockport lead on the ensuing possession. The Green and Gold converted from the line to cement the win despite Oneonta's comeback efforts, and posted the 89-86 win.

On the day, Brockport forced 20 turnovers and turned in 26 points off the Red Dragon's mistakes. The Golden Eagles also got a big lift from their bench, with 40 points, and just edged Oneonta in the lane by a margin of 44-40. Brockport shot a solid 47.1 percent from the field, and held Oneonta to just 27.8 percent shooting from three-point range.  

The Golden Eagles will return to Brockport for their final home stand of the regular season with a pair of games. The Green and Gold will host SUNY Cortland on Feb. 17, and Oswego St. on Feb. 18. Prior to the Green and Gold's tussle with the Lakers, Brockport will honor its veteran members in a senior day celebration with a ceremony held prior to tip.
