Justin Campbell Leads Anchormen Past USM, 81-80, In Overtime

Providence, R.I.--Sophomore forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) converted a three-point play with just three seconds left on the clock to give the Rhode Island College men's basketball team a thrilling 81-80 overtime victory against Southern Maine in a Little East Conference contest played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Domonique Bull (Worcester, MA) was honored in a ceremony prior to the contest.

 

Freshman guard Chris Donaldson (Bridgeport, CT) paced RIC (10-12, 4-8 LEC) with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Campbell recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Chris Farrington (Fall River, MA) also tallied 16 points in the victory for the Anchormen.

 

Junior guard Chris McCue (Hampen, ME) paced Southern Maine (8-15, 3-9 LEC) with a game-high 22 points, which included six three-pointers, to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Senior forward James Starks III (Miami, FL) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds, while senior forward Jacob Littlefield (Mechanic Falls, ME) narrowly missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds.

 

RIC jumped out to the early lead and held a 29-20 advantage after a three-pointer by Farrington with 8:18 left in the first half. Southern Maine then used a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from McCue, to tie the game, 29-29, with 5:04 remaining on the clock. The Anchormen led by as many as seven points late in the first half before taking the 38-35 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

 

The second half was a back and forth battle with the score tied, 58-58, with 8:46 left in regulation. The Huskies then used a 10-2 run to pull ahead, 68-60, on a three-pointer from McCue with just under six minutes left on the clock. Again, RIC responded and knotted the game, 70-70, on a free throw by Donaldson with 1:53 remaining.  Donaldson then hit three more free throws to give the Anchormen the 73-70 advantage. Southern Maine responded and tied the game, 73-73, on a three-pointer from Littlefield with just :10 left in regulation. RIC had one last chance with two seconds left, but couldn't convert as the game headed into overtime.

 

In the overtime period, neither team led by more than two points with Southern Maine holding a slim, 80-78advantage on a three-pointer from senior guard Zach Leal (York, ME) with :22 left on the clock. That set the stage for Campbell's heroics as he hit a layup, was fouled and then sunk a free throw with three seconds left to propel the Anchormen to the 81-80 victory.

 

RIC shot 40.8 percent (20-of-71) from the field, 32.0 percent (8-for-25) from behind the three-point stripe and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the free throw line. Southern Maine shot 42.0 percent (29-of-69) from the field, 40.5 percent (15-of-37) from three-point land and 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from the free throw line.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at Western Connecticut on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (7:30 p.m.).
