Hot shooting leads #10 Marietta over Capital 94-78

MARIETTA, Ohio — Dillon Young poured in a career-high 25 points to lead No. 10 Marietta College to a 94-78 win over Capital University Wednesday (Feb. 8) evening in Ban Johnson Arena.

The Pioneers, winners of nine straight games, improve to 18-4 overall and 13-2 in the OAC. Marietta remains tied with Ohio Northern at the top of the conference standings. Capital falls to 11-11 overall and 6-9 in the OAC.

With the Crusaders playing a zone defense, Young put on a shooting clinic sinking 9-of-11 shots from the floor including 7-of-8 from three-point range. The seven treys equaled his career-high behind the arc.

Anthony Wallace drained a pair of three-balls and finished with 18 points. Keith Richardson chipped in with 15 points, and a team-high seven rebounds and seven assists. A.J. Edwards added 12 points and four boards.

Nate Boone paced the Crusaders with 16 points. Austin Schreck and  Tyrel Jackson scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Ganiyu Yahaya added 10 points and a team-best six boards.

Capital jumped on top early with a couple of three-pointers. The Crusaders built a nine-point lead, 18-9, seven minutes into the opening period.

RaNeal Ewing splashed home a three-pointer to trigger a 13-2 Pioneer run. Young nailed two from downtown and added a layup during the run as Marietta grabbed the lead, 22-20, with 9:18 left in the first half. MC would not trail again.

A jumper from Tyler Jamison evened the score at 22-22. But the Pioneers exploded for another big run outscoring Capital 16-5 over the next four minutes to go ahead by 11 points, 38-27. Marietta took a 48-13 lead into halftime.

Young and Wallace continued their torrid shooting in the second half. Two more three-pointer from Young and one from Wallace helped Marietta pushed the margin to 23 points, 65-42, four minutes into the second half.

The Crusaders would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

For the game, Marietta shot 54.4% (31-of-57) from the floor, 48.1% (13-of-27) from three-point range and 76.0% (19-of-25) at the free throw line. Capital was 31-of-61 (50.8%) from the floor, 9-of-19 (47.4%) behind the arc and 7-of-10 (70.0%) at the line.

The Pioneers outrebounded Capital, 34-27. The Crusaders turned the ball over 11 times, while Marietta committed nine turnovers.

Marietta travels to Wilmington College on Saturday (Feb. 11) for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Quakers.
