OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team held off Plattsburgh 77-75 on Saturday afternoon in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Prior to the game, the Lakers honored their five seniors – Pat Caruso, Matt Crockett, Mykelle Krecko, Brian Sortino and Keith Tyson – for their contributions to the program.
Oswego – who clinched a conference playoff berth with Friday's win over Potsdam – sits at 17-4 overall and 13-1 in the SUNYAC while Plattsburgh falls to 10-11, 6-9. Despite never trailing again after a Sortino 3-pointer with 4:38 left in the first half, the Cardinals had the chance to send the game into overtime in the final seconds. After Ian Schupp made 1-of-2 free-throw attempts with 5.7 seconds left, Plattsburgh inbounded and charged towards the lane. An errant dribble just over mid-court was not whistled for an infraction and allowed a Cardinal guard to get to the right side of the lane. A lay-up attempt took a friendly bounce for the home team, spinning off the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded to secure the Laker victory.
Five Lakers finished with double-digit points, paced by Sortino's game-high 23 on 9-for-13 shooting from the floor. Next in the points column was Schupp with 18 followed by Jamir Ferebee with 12. The last two in double-figures were Krecko and Tyson, each with 11 points. That duo was even more crucial on the glass, combining for 25 boards. Impressively, Krecko collected 18 of that total, a new-career high to complete his sixth double-double of the year. Thanks to the rebounding prowess of that senior pair, as well as six other Lakers that gathered a carom in the tilt, Oswego owned the rebounding column by a plus-6 margin (43-37).
Krecko filled several other statistical categories as well, including six blocks to establish a fear of entering the paint. The center also dished out two assists, trailing only Ferebee and Sortino's five apiece.
Oswego – who is currently receiving five votes in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll – will return to the hardwood for competition at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when it travels west to face Fredonia.
