Five Pioneers in double figures as #13 Marietta downs Heidelberg 103-90

TIFFIN, Ohio — No. 13 Marietta College won its eighth straight game with a 103-90 victory over Heidelberg University Saturday (Feb. 4) afternoon. Five Pioneers scored in double figures as Marietta improved to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg falls to 9-12 overall and 5-9 in the OAC.

The Pioneers remain tied with Ohio Northern atop the OAC standings with four regular season games remaining. The two front-runners are will meet in the regular season finale in Ban Johnson Arena on February 18th.

Anthony Wallace led Marietta with 22 points. A.J. Edwards finished with 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Kyle Dixon chipped in with 14 points, while Keith Richardson and RaNeal Ewing scored 11 points each.

Myron Prewitt poured in a game-high 30 points for the Student Princes. Kiere Bennie scored 18 points and grabbed four boards, while DeAvery Collins added 13 points.

Marietta scored three quick buckets and then a three-pointer from Wallace made it 9-3 forcing Heidelberg to call a timeout two minutes into the game. The Student Princes responded with nine straight points to take their only lead of the day, 12-9, at the 16:02 mark.

The Pioneers answered with a 6-0 run to go back on top. Marietta would not relinquish the lead again. MC used a 9-0 run to push the margin into double digits and led by as many as 17 points in the half.

Heidelberg finished the first half on an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to seven points, 49-42, at the break.

Marietta got a layup from Dixon and a three-pointer from Dillon Young to start the second half pushing the lead back to 12 points, 54-42. The Pioneers extended the margin to 18 points, 74-56, at the 10:32 mark.

Heidelberg chipped away at the lead and a three-pointer from Collins with 3:16 left got the Student Princes within six, 87-81. But a layup from Edwards and an old-fashioned three-point play from Dixon quickly pushed the margin back to 10 points and effectively secured the victory.

Heidelberg was forced to foul and the Pioneers were a perfect 8-for-8 at the line in the final minute. Wallace hit a pair of free throws and Dillon sank six straight.

For the game, Marietta shot 55.6% (35-of-63) from the floor, 36.4% (8-of-22) from three-point range and 80.6% (25-of-31) at the free throw line. Heidelberg was 36-of-70 (51.4%) from the floor, 11-of-25 (44.0%) behind the arc and 7-of-12 (58.3%) at the line.

Marietta dominated the glass outrebounding the Student Princes, 41-27. The Pioneers turned the ball over 18 times, while Heidelberg committed 15 turnovers.

Marietta travels to Columbus on Wednesday (Feb. 8) for a 7:30 p.m. game at Capital University.
