PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team took on the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles on Friday night from the Danzi Athletic Center on Long Island. The Privateers fell to their hosts by a score of 72-51.
Maritime struggled from the field hitting just one-third of their chances as the team went 20-for-60 from the floor. The team was ice cold from beyond the arc as the Privateers connected on just 2-of-22 chances, while the squad also struggled from the free throw line going 7-for-19 from the stripe.
Junior John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) connected on nine of Maritime's 20 made shots as he led the team with 19 points. Liccese also led the Privateers with four assists and three steals.
Senior Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) had 11 points, as did junior Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius), the junior center also led the Privateers with 13 rebounds. MacDonald and senior Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) each had one block on the night.
The Golden Eagles opened the contest with the first eight points before Liccese knocked down a jumper to get the Privateers on the board. Trailing 16-4, Maritime scored the next four points as junior Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) sank a pair from the line while MacDonald connected on a layup with 12:50 left in the opening half.
St. Joseph's continued to add to its lead and held its largest lead of the opening stanza at 23 with a 41-18 lead with just under a minute to go. Liccese closed out the period with four unanswered points to send the teams into the locker room with the Golden Eagles ahead by a 41-22 score.
Hoch opened the second half with a layup, but St. Joseph's continued to hang on to a 20-point lead. With 9:23 left in the second half, Maritime strung together five unanswered points as Liccese put together a three-point play and Parlow sank a layup.
The Golden Eagles poured in 10 points to take a 25-point lead with 3:18 left in the contest. Clark hit a free throw and junior Josh Raime (Elmont, N.Y./Holy Cross) picked up a three-pointer before St. Joseph's closed out the game with two free throws to seal the victory.
Maritime (6-9, 2-5 Skyline) will close out non-conference play on Monday evening at 7 p.m., when the Privateers play host to the Hunter Hawks from Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
St. Joseph's (LI) (5-11, 5-3 Skyline) will visit Lehman on Monday at 7 p.m. as the Golden Eagles will also close out non-conference play against a CUNYAC opponent.
