#15 Marietta downs Baldwin Wallace 100-91

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College never trailed as the No. 15-ranked Pioneers defeated Baldwin Wallace, 100-91, Saturday (Jan. 28) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta improves to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Pioneers remain tied for first in the OAC with Ohio Northern University. Baldwin Wallace slips to 9-10 overall and 4-8 in the OAC.

A.J. Edwards notched a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Anthony Wallace finished with 20 points. Kyle Dixon chipped in with 17 points and eight rebounds. Dillon Young added 15 points and six boards, while RaNeal Ewing finished with 11 points.

Jake Fetherolf drained six three-pointers and finished with 20 points to lead Baldwin Wallace. Michael Quiring scored 16 points and dished out seven assists. Jay Battle and Mike Kaminski scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The game featured two distinct game plans as the Pioneers pounded the ball inside all day, while the Yellow Jackets were firing from long range. Marietta outscored BW 48-22 in the paint, but the Yellow Jackets nailed 17 three-pointers to keep Marietta from pulling away.

Baldwin Wallace stayed with Marietta through the first 10 minutes of the game knotting the score three times. But the Pioneers gradually extended the lead to 10 points, 42-32, on a layup from Wallace with 1:55 left in the half.  MC led 47-37 at halftime.

A pair of free throws from Young made it a 15-point game, 82-67, at the 7:29 mark of the second half. BW refused to go away quietly running off a 13-2 run to get within four points, 86-82, with 3:30 left on the clock.

Wallace competed an old-fashioned three-point play to make it a seven-point game, 89-82, with 3:13 left. BW was forced to foul Marietta down the stretch. The Pioneers were 8-for-8 at the line in the final minutes of the game to secure the victory.

For the game, Marietta shot 54.0% (34-of-63) from the floor, 36.8% (7-of-19) from three-point range and 86.2% (25-of-29) at the free throw line. Baldwin Wallace was 31-of-60 (51.7%) from the floor, 17-of-36 (47.2%) behind the arc and 12-of-15 (80.0%) at the line.

Marietta edged the Yellow jackets on the boards, 33-28. Baldwin Wallace committed 14 turnovers resulting 22 MC points. Marietta turned the ball over just seven times on the day.

Marietta travels to Alliance on Wednesday (Feb. 1) for a 7 p.m. game at the University of Mount Union.
