Men’s Basketball Rallies to Defeat Griffins

ASTON, Pa. – The No. 21 Neumann University men's basketball team rallied and defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 92-77 on Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match-up.

DeShawn Lowman led the Knights with 27 points and 13 rebounds. He was one assist away from a triple double, finishing with nine. Carl Wallace netted 20 points. DeAndre Williams hit five three-pointers and finished with 19 points. Darian Barnes tallied his own double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.


The first half featured runs by both teams, five tied scores and six lead changes. About five minutes into the game, the Knights took a 13-all score and eight of the next 10 points to take a 21-15 lead. The Griffins started to chip their way back and with 7:08 left on the clock, a three-pointer put GMU back in the lead, 29-27. Two free throws by Wallace tied the game at 29 before the Griffins went on a 10-2 run for a 39-31 score with 3:54 left before halftime. Neumann went on its own runs and a dunk by Barnes pulled the Knights to within one, 40-39, with 1:39 on the clock. Gwynedd Mercy scored the final four points of the half to take a 44-39 lead into the locker room.


The Knights tied the game at 46 just over a minute into the second half on a three-pointer by Williams. The Griffins answered by scoring the next seven points. Neumann would get to within a point or two over the next 10 minutes, but could not get the basket to fall to get the lead.


With 8:59 left in regulation, Wallace went 1-for-2 from the line to pull the score even at 67. After the Griffins answered with a basket, Lowman hit a layup and one to give the Knights a 70-69 lead, one they would not relinquish. Both teams had chances over the next minute, but Lowman and Tyaire Hudson hit back to back layups to take a five point advantage, 74-69.


The Knights continued its late game run and a three-pointer by Lowman with 4:08 left put Neumann up by double figures, 81-70. Once Neumann took the 70-69 lead, the Knights finished the game on a 22-8 run over the final eight minutes.


Neumann (18-1, 12-0 CSAC) will host Immaculata on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader with the women. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 PM.
