#15 Marietta soars over Otterbein 94-75

MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 15-ranked Marietta College men's basketball team had little trouble dispatching Otterbein University, 94-75, Wednesday (Jan. 25) evening in Ban Johnson Arena.

The Pioneers improve to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta remains in a tie with Ohio Northern for first place in the OAC standings. Otterbein dropped to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in the OAC.

A.J. Edwards led all scorers with 23 points. RaNeal Ewing finished with 13 points and Dillon Young notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Dixon also pulled down 11 boards as the Pioneers totally dominated the paint on both ends of the floor.

Austin Springer led the Cardinals with 17 points. Grant Fenner chipped in with 15 points and Matt Hughes had seven points and seven rebounds.

Marietta outscored the Cardinals 46-28 in the paint and held a commanding 51-31 edge on the glass. The Pioneers turned 13 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points.

Springer gave Otterbein the early lead with a three-pointer on the Cardinals first possession. But back-to-back buckets from Edwards put the Pioneers in front for good.

Edwards' two baskets started a 21-0 run for the Pioneers. Anthony Wallace hit a pair of three-pointers during the streak and Ewing capped the run with yet another triple making it 21-3 seven minutes into the game. MC led by as many as 24 points in the first half and took a 50-38 lead into the break.

The second half was more of the same. The Cardinals could get no closer than 10 points. A Nate Walker three-pointer pushed the margin to 28 points, 79-51, midway through the period allowing Pioneer head coach Jon VanderWal to clear his bench.

For the game, Marietta shot 48.6% (26-of-74) from the floor, 50.0% (11-of-22) from three-point range and 84.6% (11-of-13) at the free throw line. Otterbein was 25-of-63 (39.7%) from the floor, 11-of-34 (32.4%) behind the arc and 14-of-20 (70.0%) at the line.

Marietta hosts Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday (Jan. 28) for a 3 p.m. game in Ban Johnson Arena.
