Pomona, NJ: The #13 Ramapo College men's basketball team improved to 16-1 overall, 10-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference today with an 89-81 road win over Stockton University. The Ospreys drop to 9-7 overall, 4-6 in the conference.
Ramapo scored the first basket of the game when Christopher Moseley hit a jumper off a dish from Sultan Aminu for a quick 2-0 lead. Stockton used a 6-0 run to take a four point lead before they used another 5-0 run to take an 11-4 lead with 16:18 on the clock. Josh Ford and Nick Stanek cut the Stockton lead to two with back-to-back baskets 14-16 with 13:16 left in the half. Zahir Newell started a 9-0 run for Ramapo that was capped off by Aminu as he made a layup and converted on his free throw to take a three point lead 23-20. Following back-to-back dunks from Stockton, Ramapo went on a mini 6-0 run to go up 29-24 with 6:24 on the clock. The Ospreys cut the lead to two with a layup from Darius Jerkins before Ramapo's James Long nailed a three-pointer off an assist from Ford for a 34-29 lead. Brandon Hamilton hit back-to-back shots for Stockton with under one minute on the clock to tie the game 34-34. Aminu would score the final basket of the half to send the Roadrunners into halftime up one with a made free throw 35-34.
In the second half the two teams traded points and stayed within one point of each other until Patrick Peterson hit a free throw to tie the game at 47 all with 15:35. Stanek converted on his free throws for a two point lead 49-47 before Stockton went on a 6-3 run to take a 53-52 on a made basket from Kashaun Barnes with 13:27 on the clock. Ramapo used a 6-0 run to go up five point lead. Long started the run with a made layup and Ford capped off the run with a made basket off a pass from Thomas Bonacum 62-57 (9:23). Stockton came back to tie the game at 66 before Ramapo went on a 6-0 run taking a 72-66 lead with 6:14 on the clock, the run was snapped by Tom Catanoso's three-pointer for the Ospreys cutting the lead back to three 69-72 with 5:15 left in the game. Ramapo did not give up the lead in the final five minutes of action as they outscored the Ospreys 16-12. With under two minutes to play Moseley sank a pair of free throws extending the Ramapo lead to 80-74 before the two teams traded a pair of made free throws from Catanoso and Bonacum - keeping the Ramapo lead at six 82-76. The Roadrunners took their biggest lead of the game with 22 seconds remaining 89-79 following made free throws from Ford. Stockton posted the final basket of the game from Catanoso as the Roadrunners came away with an important NJAC road victory 89-81.
Ramapo shot 53% (28-52) from the floor, 40% (4-10) from the three-point line and 80% (29-36) from the free throw line in the game. The Roadrunners were led by Bonacum who scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Long was 3-5 from behind the three-point line and scored 16 points on the day. Aminu grabbed eight rebounds and scored 15 points while Ford collected 12 points, three assists and two steals. Moseley and Peterson each contributed with ten points while Moseley was perfect from the floor today. He was 3-3 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Jerkins posted a team high 16 points and five blocks for Stockton while Harmon added a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Hart added 12 points while Catanoso posted 11 points and five assists. The team shot 43% (28-64) from the field, 25% (7-27) from the three-point line and 81% (18-22) from the free throw line in the game.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, January 25th when they host NJAC rival Montclair State University at 7:30pm in the Bradley Center.
