ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth Golden Flyers never trailed and went up by as many as 11 points before settling for a 74-65 win over the visiting Hartwick men's basketball team Saturday evening at Kidera Gymnasium. With the win, the Golden Flyers improve to 9-6 and 3-3 in the Empire 8. Hartwick has now dropped its second straight game and falls to 11-6 and 4-4 in the league.
A three from Jake Sinicki (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell HS) with 15:22 remaining in the game brought 'Wick within one, for the first time all game, 40-39. However, Nazareth rattled off six unanswered points to go back up seven at the 12:51 mark.
Corey Baker (Granby, MA/Granby HS) buried a triple over four minutes later to again see the visitors only down one. Though Jake Burgio answered with a quick two on the other end, Marc du Moulin's (Altamont, NY/Guilderland HS) finish in the paint also supported what had potential to be a 'Wick comeback, 50-49, with just 7:33 to play.
Unfortunately, Cody Green landed a trey swiftly after on the ensuing possession as the game continued in the Golden Flyers' favor.
In 29 minutes off the bench, du Moulin registered a career-high 20 points and 13 boards in support of just his second double-double this season. The junior did so going 9-of-15 from the floor (60 percent), 2-of-2 from the charity stripe and corralling eight rebounds on the defensive glass and five on his team's end.
Sinicki finished with his fourth double-double in conference comprised of 17 points and 12 boards where four came on the offensive glass. He shot 6-for-13 from the floor (46 percent) while sinking half of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Justin Pratt (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown HS) and Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes HS) each reached eight points while LaForest also contributed seven dimes and two steals.
For the opposition, Burgio ended with 20 points and 12 rebounds off the bench while Tyler Stenglein, the high-scorer of the night, added 22 points, six boards, four dimes, one block and one steal.
As a team, 'Wick shot both 34.8 percent from the field and three-point range to Nazareth's 40.7 percent and 17.4 percent from distance. Hartwick did best the opponent in second chance points on a 17-4 margin.
With the first half of Empire 8 play in the books, Hartwick looks to its second meeting with Elmira next Saturday, January 28. The action at Lambros Arena tips off at 4 p.m.
