Brockport posts decisive team win over Potsdam, 92-62

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team put on an offensive show on Saturday, taking care of business in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against SUNY Potsdam, 92-62.
 

The Golden Eagles improve to 14-3 on the year and 9-1 in league play while the Bears fall to 1-15 on the year 0-10 in the SUNYAC.

 

With an 8-0 run to start the contest, the Green and Gold took the lead and never looked back. Brockport used a team of scores from Marcus Blythers, Hamed Shamseldin, Matthew Smith and Clifton Lyerly to push out to an early lead. The Golden Eagles continued to use balanced scoring to edge the Bears throughout the contest.  

 

The Brockport lead hit the double digit mark after a Lyerly triple pushed the Green and Gold advantage to 17-5 under eight minutes into the contest. Head coach Greg Dunne's squad kept a healthy distance from their counterparts, with balanced offensive production.

 

Smith and Shamseldin each knocked down a three to send the Golden Eagles into the break with a 45-27 advantage.

 

At the break, Blythers led all scorers with 11 points while grabbing six rebounds. Shamseldin netted nine in the opening stanza while Smith chipped in seven. As a team, Brockport shot a hot 45.5 percent in the first half, with 50 percent from three-point range. 

 

Out of the break, the Golden Eagles went right to work, as the lead quickly swelled to 31 after a 12-0 run started the half. Out of the 12 points, Shamseldin poured in 10 for the 59-28 lead.

 

The Golden Eagles continued their unselfish play, with 14 players working into the scoring column, while maintaining a convincing lead over the Bears. Some fresh faces saw time for the Green and Gold in the second half, with Montgomery Stroman and Michael O'Hara each working in the lane for scores and Mitch Cote and Malick Sylla connecting on treys to post a 92-62 win.

 

Shamseldin led all scorers with 19 points and two assists, while Blythers and Devonn Gavin each worked into double-figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. Blythers was one rebound shy of the double-double while Gavin dished out two assists.

 

As a team, the Green and Gold shot 42.1 percent from the floor and connected on nine threes while holding Potsdam to 32.1 percent from the field and a mere 8.3 percent from three-point land. Brockport forced 21 Bear turnovers on the day, which they used for 21 points, and posted a 46-30 advantage in the paint.

 

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 24 when they host Fredonia to wrap up their home stretch.
