Oswego's Red Hot Shooting Too Much for Cortland

More news about: Oswego State

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team used a strong first-half offensive performance and held off Cortland late to roll the Red Dragons 104-94 on the road Saturday afternoon. Oswego improves to 13-4 on the year and 9-1 in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons drop to 11-6, 6-4.

In the first stanza, the Lakers opened the game on an 8-0 run and never looked back. From the 13:43 point of the first half until 9:59 left in regulation, Oswego led by double digits. Cortland made a late second half push, cutting the Laker lead to as little as five points, but Oswego held off the home team.

Oswego had a lead of as many as 22 in the first half, going to the locker rooms at half with a 21-point, 59-38 advantage. The Lakers grew its lead to as many as 25 in the second half before the Red Dragons started to chip away. Oswego's hot shooting performance of 59.4% from the field – including 56.0% from beyond the arc – was too much for the home squad to overcome.

Brian Sortino paced Oswego with 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor, six of which came from distance on just nine attempts. Also reaching the 20-point plateau was Jamir Ferebee with 21 on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. Just one point shy of 20 points was Ian Schupp, who went 4-for-7 on treys and 2-for-5 inside the arc. Rounding out the double-digit Laker scorers was Tyler Pierre. The sophomore scored 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and two made freebies.

In the rebounding category, a statistic that Oswego owned by a 32-28 margin, Mykelle Krecko had a game-high nine boards to go along with his nine points. The big man also dished out three of the Lakers' 20 assists, the same amount as Schupp. Ahead of that duo in helpers were Ferebee with a team-high five and Sortino with four. Ferebee added three steals on his day.

Oswego's next game will be at 5:30 on Friday when it hosts current co-SUNYAC leader Brockport in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Both squads sport a 9-1 conference mark, with the Golden Eagles facing Fredonia in a mid-week tilt prior to the contest with the Lakers.
