ALBION, Mich. – The Albion College men's basketball team listened to Milton Barnes, '79, at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Dialogue and Service Monday, as he advised the audience that positivity must outweigh negativity.

The Britons heeded that advice, coming back from as many as 13 points down in the second half to rally for a 79-71 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet College Wednesday night.

"We became passive on the offensive end when they started making shots," Head Coach Jody May said.

Corey Wheeler hit a pair from 3-point range and Dylan Bennett added another from long distance as Albion ripped off nine points in less than two minutes to move within four, 65-61, with five minutes to play.

Bennett tacked on a pair of free throws and Aquavius Burks sank a layup as Albion forged a tie at 65 with four minutes left.

The lead changed three times down the stretch before Albion took the lead for good on Jason Zahran's layup with 43 seconds to play.

Robert Ryan and Zahran combined to go 6-for-6 from the line to seal the victory.

Game Notes

  • Albion shot 49 percent from the field, its best of the season
  • Wheeler and Bennett produced 16 points apiece for the Britons
  • Bennett scored in double figures for the season time in his collegiate career
  • Zahran produced his third double-double of the season with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds

"Jason is not the most talented, but he is gritty and you love to have him on your team," May said. "He finds a way to make an impact on the team."

  • Ryan Lowe gave the Britons a boost off the bench, finishing with five points and five rebounds
  • Albion also received a boost from the student section which included support from the women's basketball, swimming, and track & field teams.

"It's so nice to have started spring semester classes," May said. "We've been here for more than a month without the students. It was a lot of fun to play in front of them."
