UMHB men top U.T. Dallas 83-71

Richardson, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team controlled the second half as the Cru erased a double-digit deficit on the way to an 83-71 victory over U.T. Dallas Monday evening in Richardson. UMHB moves to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in American Southwest Conference play with its ninth win in the last 11 games. The loss drops the Comets to 3-13 overall and 2-7 in ASC play on the season.

U.T. Dallas led 36-29 after a first half that featured six lead changes and the Comets stretched the lead to 48-38 with 16:33 left in the game. UMHB scored the next nine points to cut the lead to one point and the Cru took its first lead of the second half on a Demarius Cress layup for a 60-59 edge with 8:07 remaining. UTD would retake the lead at 62-60 and also held a 64-63 lead with 6:01 to play. Cress hit another jumper to put UMHB on top to stay and Daniel Mills and Aubrie King combined to score the Cru's final 14 points as the team pulled away for the victory. The Cru's bench outscored UTD's 30-7 in the second half as UMHB controlled the game in the final eight minutes.

Mills and King finished with 21 points apiece to lead the Cru. Mills was 8-13 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. King hit five three-pointers. Cress added 19 points and Keenan Holdman poured in 15 for UMHB. The Cru shot 57 percent from the field in the second half and finished at 48 percent for the game. UMHB also made 23-25 from the free throw line.

Caleb Banks led UTD with 19 points and he added 10 assists. Jon Hatcher had 13 points, Kyle Coulter scored 12 and 10 rebounds. Dimitrious Underwood added 10 points. The Comets shot 40 percent from the field and went 9-29 from three-point range. UTD was 14-19 from the charity stripe in the loss.

The Cru will close out its four-game road trip with two more games later this week. UMHB will face Howard Payne University in a 7:30 PM tip Thursday night in Brownwood. The Cru will then face Sul Ross State in a 3:00 PM start in Alpine on Saturday to close out the trip.
