Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Red Hawks fell to The College of New Jersey at Packer Hall, 82-74.
Senior Brandon Channer scored 26 points and added three rebounds, three assists and four steals for MSU, which fell to 8-7 overall, 5-3 in the NJAC.
Eric Murdock, Jr., paced TCNJ (11-5, 7-2 NJAC) with 11 points, five rebounds and 10 assists. Bobby Brackett registered a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
An eight-point run early in the first half gave the Lions an 11-4 lead which they would hold on to until the midpoint of the period. A three-pointer by Jovanni Chatham and jumper from Jaleel Christmon got MSU within 21-19 with 11:31 to play.
But a 12-0 run over the next two-plus minutes put the Lions up 33-21. That double-digit lead allowed TCNJ to take a 48-37 lead into the locker room.
Trailing 53-37 in the second half, Montclair State cut the gap to five points with an 11-0 run. Channer had five of those points and a layup from Jarrett Bogus pulled MSU within 53-48 with 14:31 left. TCNJ responded with 11 of the next 13 points to go back up by 14 with Montclair making a late push.
Christmon, who finished with 12 points, scored with 54 seconds to make the score 78-71 however Brackett scored at the other end to dash any further comeback.
Anfield finished with 15 points and seven assists for Montclair, which got eight rebounds from Christmon. Jordan Roberson added nine points and seven rebounds.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 18 at home against Kean University beginning at 8:00 pm. The Red Hawks will look to take the season set with the Cougars after posting a 62-54 victory in Union on November 22.
