Oswego holds off Bears, 86-76

POTSDAM, N.Y.- Oswego State (11-4, 7-1 SUNYAC) topped the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-13, 0-8 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon 86-76. Sophomore guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) led the Bears with 20 points and freshman forward Kristoff Saunders (Queens, N.Y./Queens H.S. of Teaching) had a team-high seven rebounds and 12 points. Senior guard Brian Sortino (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) finished with 22 points for the Lakers, while fellow senior Keith Tyson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) grabbed a game-high eight boards and 16 points.
 
Onabor started off the scoring for both sides with a 3-pointer 54 seconds into the half and Tyson followed it with a jumper for Oswego. Potsdam got out to a four-point lead three times over the first six and half minutes of play with the last being a layup from Saunders. The Lakers started a 9-2 mini run before freshman guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) completed a three-point play to halt Oswego in their tracks. The teams traded baskets over the rest of the half and the Bears got out to their largest lead of seven after a layup from Onabor with 1:15 to go. Sortino completed his own three-point play to get Potsdam's lead down to four and closed out the half.
 
Junior guard Ian Schupp (New Hampton, N.Y./Goshen) started off the scoring in the second with a jumper followed by a steal from Tyson that led to a layup from Schupp. Potsdam got on the board with two free throws from Saunders and another two from freshman guard Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens H.S. of Teaching). At 15:21, the Lakers went on a 21-2 run, which ended in their largest lead of the night of 18. The Bears responded with their own 14-4 run ignited by two free throws from sophomore guard Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) and capped with the same result. Potsdam got Oswego's lead down to eight with 7:26 remaining. The Bears got within eight again after a steal from Onabor and he laid it in for two points, but this was as close as Potsdam would get before the Lakers took the 86-76 win.
 
Langley finished with 11 points, while Delsol-Lowry and Thomas each tacked on 10 points. Delsol-Lowry grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
 
Schupp tallied 17 points for the Lakers and junior guard Jamir Ferebee (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) added 13 points.
 
Potsdam edged Oswego 36-33 in rebounds and the Lakers held the advantage 50 to 45 percent from the floor.
 
The Bears will hit the road to battle with SUNY Geneseo Friday at 5:30 p.m. and College at Brockport Saturday at 2 p.m.
