ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Sean Ryan (Plainfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) scored a career-high 17 points and the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team closed the game on a 16-7 run over the final four minutes in a 77-71 ODAC victory over Roanoke Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets (10-5, 6-0 ODAC) won their seventh straight game and remained in first place in the ODAC standings.
The Maroons (6-8, 1-5 ODAC) hit a three-pointer with 4:15 remaining to snap a 61-61 deadlock. R-MC had an 11-2 run as Ryan hit a three-pointer, senior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) sank two treys and sophomore Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) punctuated the run with a dunk as the Yellow Jackets built a 72-66 lead with 1:44 left. RC had a trey and a layup to cut the deficit to one at 72-71 with 50 seconds left. Sophomore Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) hit the season-high 15th three-pointer for the Yellow Jackets with 25.9 seconds left to put the home team up 75-71. After a missed shot by the Maroons, Taylor hit a pair of free throws to make the final 77-71.
Neither team led by more than four in the first 15 minutes. The Maroons jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead before senior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) and Ryan hit three-pointers in an 8-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets went up 10-7 with just under four minutes gone in the contest. RC put together a 7-2 run to take a 14-12 lead with 11:30 left. Freshman Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Acadeny) sank a three-pointer to cap an 8-2 run as R-MC took a 20-16 advantage with just under eight minutes left in the half. The Maroons had a 13-3 spurt to surge ahead 29-23 with 4:44 left before taking a 34-30 lead at intermission. Junior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) had seven first-half points, while sophomore Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) contributed six points and seven rebounds.
Ryan hit a pair of three-pointers, while Noe had a trey and a layup as R-MC started the second half with 11 straight points to take a 41-34 lead three minutes into the period. The Yellow Jackets were up 43-36 before the Maroons used a 9-2 spurt to knot the score at 45-45 with 13:25 left. A Ryan layup and a trey by Midulla gave R-MC a 50-45 advantage with 11:20 remaining. RC had a 13-5 run to reclaim the lead at 58-55 with 7:25 left. The Yellow Jackets trailed 61-59 before a Noe layup tied it at 61-61 with 4:45 remaining.
There were nine ties and 14 lead changes in the contest.
Noe finished with 16 points, while Taylor and Midulla both scored a dozen for the Yellow Jackets. Taylor tallied all his points in the second half. He also paced the victors with seven assists.
R-MC dominated the boards, 43-24. Adams led the Yellow Jackets with eight caroms.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, January 18, for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Shenandoah.
